By the time she managed to grasp a piece, her hands were numb. It took several tries before she could tear the wrapper open. As the sweetness spread through her mouth, the world slowly began to steady itself.
Just as she was about to stand, a pair of casual sneakers entered her line of sight.
"Miss, what happened? Let me help you up."
A man's voice, and then he was gently helping her to her feet.
Suzie looked up into a handsome, friendly face. She quickly pulled her arm away, saying politely, "I'm fine, thank you."
The man's hand paused in mid-air before he crouched down to help her gather her scattered belongings. Once everything was back in her bag, he offered his arm again. "You look like you might pass out. It's probably not a good idea to walk by yourself right now. Let me help you to that café over there to rest."
Suzie glanced in the direction he was pointing—an upscale coffee shop. Afraid she might fall again, she gave a slight nod.
But just as the man helped her to her feet, a large hand clamped down on her other arm, gripping it so tightly it hurt.
Jamie!
Before she could react, Jamie shoved the other man away and snatched her bag from his hand.
"What are you doing?" Suzie demanded, trying to wrench her arm free.
Jamie shot her a furious glare before turning his cold eyes back to the stranger. "Get lost."
The man just smiled, unfazed. "The lady appears to be suffering from low blood sugar. Grabbing her like that is only going to make her feel worse."
At his words, Jamie's gaze remained icy, but his grip on Suzie's arm loosened, shifting to an embrace around her waist.
"Miss, do you know him?" the stranger asked gently, his hands now in his pockets. "If you need help, just say the word. I can handle myself in a fight."
"Tell him who I am to you!" Jamie's command was a low growl in Suzie's ear.
The man took a few steps forward. "Are you sure you don't need help? Who is this guy?"
Before Suzie could answer, Jamie cut in coldly, "I'm her husband. Now you can get lost."
The man's brow furrowed. He gave Jamie a long look before retorting coolly, "Oh? In that case, you seem to be a very incompetent husband."
With that, the stranger turned and walked away.
"Are you satisfied now, letting a complete stranger lecture me?" Jamie's frigid voice came from above her.
She was speechless again. He was an unreasonable man. Completely and utterly unreasonable!
"Did I ask you to come back? Was he wrong? Now can you please let me go?"
Whether it was the stranger's words that provoked him or some other madness, Jamie's next words were laced with venom.
