The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 53

Even though she knew getting Jamie to apologize was practically impossible, Suzie couldn't stop herself from speaking her mind.

"The restaurant, I've already instructed Aaron to handle the purchase. As for that man, I doubt he’ll have an easy time working in Mornhaven after this."

Suzie’s righteous anger evaporated. Hearing his words and seeing the icy coldness radiating from his eyes, she felt a chill run down her spine. Yes, this was the real Jamie—decisive, ruthless, and intolerant of any opposition.

"Jamie! If you dare do anything to Oliver, I swear I won’t let you get away with it!" Suzie hissed, her eyes turning red as she stared him down. She knew he always did what he said he would. If Oliver got hurt because of her, she would be a sinner. What could she do?

"Oliver? You call some other man by his name so intimately?" Jamie asked, his tone deceptively mild.

Suzie watched as the hard line of his jaw softened and a strange, unreadable smile played on his lips. She fought to control her emotions, keeping her voice as calm as possible. "Oliver grew up next door. He and Stella are family to me. Please don’t insult people so casually, and please stop your tyrannical bullying."

"Oh? You want me to let him go? That’s not impossible, but only if you agree to one condition."

As he spoke, Jamie slowly advanced on Suzie, backing her against the wall until she had nowhere to go.

Suzie swallowed hard, her voice trembling slightly. "What condition?!"

Jamie’s gaze slid slowly from her face down to her abdomen. He leaned in close to her ear and whispered, "Get rid of what’s in your stomach."

Suzie looked at his eyes, which were gradually turning red with anger, and for the first time, she found the man before her truly terrifying.

"Jamie, we’re divorced. You have no right to do this to me," she retorted, her voice shaking.

A cold voice whispered in her ear again. "Then you just wait and see if I have the right or not."

Suzie slapped his hand away from her chin and wiped her tears. "If you try anything, I’ll call the police!" she yelled. "I don't believe you're powerful enough to control everything!"

With that, she covered her mouth and ran, tears streaming through her fingers like a broken dam.
