The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 54

On the way home, Suzie felt like a lost soul. She should have known she couldn't hide it from him. He could find out anything he wanted to know. His coldness and cruelty were just as she had imagined. What could she do? When Jamie became unhinged, he didn't care about anyone. When she decided to keep the babies, she had resolved to protect them no matter what. What was she supposed to do now? She shouldn't have provoked him. She needed to think more about her children; staying as far away from him as possible was the only way.

When Suzie arrived at Stella’s house in a daze, she found Oliver sitting on the living room sofa, as if he had been waiting for her.

"Oliver, are you okay?" Suzie pushed down her anxiety, quickly dropped her bag, changed her shoes, and hurried over to him. "I called you after I left the restaurant, but you didn’t answer. I’m so sorry, Oliver. This is all my fault."

Oliver slowly stood up and studied her for a long moment. "I’m fine, don’t worry. But why do you look so pale? Did he give you a hard time? Did something else happen?" By the end of his questions, his tone had turned grim, as if he were ready to march out and settle things with Jamie then and there.

Suzie shook her head and sank wearily onto the sofa. "No… that’s just how he is. He thinks the whole world should revolve around him. If it weren’t for Richard…"

Oliver sat down beside her. When she trailed off, he asked gently, "If it weren’t for Richard, what would you do?"

Oliver’s gaze softened with pity. "Alright, Suzie. In that case, I support you," he said kindly. "Just remember, no matter when you need help, I’ll be here for you."

His sincere words moved Suzie, but also made her a little uncomfortable. In a way, she felt this was another debt she owed him. She had learned from Stella that Oliver had been doing well overseas but had rushed back to the country just for her. Even after returning, he had helped her secretly from a distance, afraid of disturbing her. That, combined with Jamie's threat against him today, made her feel even more uneasy.

Suzie was about to say something else when her phone buzzed with a text notification. She pulled it out and saw two messages from Sienna.
