The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 58

Suzie’s icy voice echoed in the empty hallway, sending a chill down the spine of anyone who might have heard it.

She didn’t beg. She didn’t struggle. She simply stared at him with a look of pure hatred.

Jamie’s Adam’s apple bobbed. His sharp eyes studied the woman before him. The smile on her lips was not one of joy, but one of grim resolve, a smile so broken it barely looked human.

Before he could say a word, Suzie shot him one last venomous look, pushed open the doors to the operating room, and walked inside. The doctors and nurses followed close behind.

The moment she was inside, Suzie’s eyes darted around, searching for the surgical instruments.

Spotting her target, she waited for the exact moment a nurse swung the door shut, then lunged for a tray of tools, snatching a scalpel and pressing it to her own throat.

Perhaps because she had been so cooperative until now, her sudden move completely stunned the medical staff.

They started to scream, but Suzie’s voice cut through the air, a harsh whisper. “If anyone makes a sound or tries to leave this room, I’ll slit my own throat!”

They exchanged horrified, helpless glances. They all knew who Jamie was and had assumed she was there for a quiet procedure after getting pregnant by him. During the exams, they had discovered she was carrying triplets, a fact that had stirred a pang of regret in them all. Besides, she had been so silent and compliant from the moment she arrived. Who would have guessed she was being forced?

They were being paid well for this, but if it was going to involve a human life, none of them wanted any part of it.

One by one, they clamped their hands over their mouths, stifling any sound. With wide eyes and frantic gestures, they pleaded with her to put the scalpel down.

Suzie watched them with cold eyes. “Turn on the OR lights!” she commanded.

One of them scrambled to flip the switch before quickly returning to his spot.

The tremor was so violent that the sharp blade accidentally nicked the skin of her neck. A trickle of blood immediately soaked into the collar of her white shirt.

“Miss, you’re bleeding! Please, put the scalpel down, it’s too dangerous!”

“Yes, if you want to save your babies, you have to protect yourself! If you hit an artery, not even a miracle could save you!”

They all started talking at once, their voices a jumble of panic.

Then, a middle-aged female doctor spoke, her voice choked with emotion. “My dear, I’m a woman too. I’ve… I’ve lost a child before. We didn’t know you were being forced. The video… I can figure something out. Just please, put the scalpel down. We’ll do whatever you say. Just put it down.”

Her body still trembling uncontrollably, Suzie gasped for breath, her eyes darting between the faces before her. She still didn’t trust them. She knew Jamie must have paid them a fortune.
