The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 63

Lexi’s expression changed instantly, her features smoothing into a warm, deferential smile as she greeted Harrison. “Oh, Mr. Young! What can I do for you?”

“Did Ms. Sterling do something wrong?” Harrison asked, rubbing his brow and ignoring Lexi’s question.

Lexi’s mind raced. She tried to parse Harrison’s tone, to guess at his relationship with Suzie. Her gut told her that Harrison valued Suzie, so she quickly replied, “Not at all. Ms. Sterling’s work is impressive. In fact, I just chose her, even as a new hire, to join me on the Baylor Group project. We were just having a small debate over a difference of opinion.”

Having said that, Lexi shot Suzie a look, her voice becoming incredibly soft. “Isn’t that right, Ms. Sterling?”

Suzie blinked, her gaze shifting between the two of them for a moment before she replied, “Yes, Mr. Young. We were just discussing work.”

Harrison frowned and gave a hesitant nod. “Alright then. If you’re finished, Ms. Sterling, could you come to my office?”

“Of course, Mr. Young.”

With Harrison present, Lexi didn't dare press the earlier issue. Instead, she respectfully saw them both out.

“Thank you, Harrison. I’m really sorry for all the trouble,” Suzie said, thanking him profusely. She felt a pang of guilt. It was only her first day, and it already looked like she was being picky, just like that girl had said—as if she’d gotten the job through connections.

Harrison saw the guilt in her eyes and waved it off, comforting her patiently. “Don’t be so formal with me. You and Oliver grew up together, and he’s one of my best friends, which makes you my friend, too. If you run into any trouble here, you can come to me anytime. Remember, your health comes first. I’m counting on you to do great work here.”

His polite yet kind words warmed Suzie’s heart, but they also made her feel even more indebted to Oliver.

She felt a wave of relief that Jamie, thinking the doctor had actually terminated the pregnancy that day at the hospital, hadn't gone after Oliver. Otherwise, she would have felt guilty for the rest of her life.
