The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 62

“You’re new here, too?” Lexi asked, stopping in front of Suzie’s desk with a hint of arrogance in her voice.

“Yes,” Suzie replied, standing up out of basic courtesy.

Lexi extended her right hand, palm up. “Let me see your qualifications.”

After a brief hesitation, Suzie handed Lexi the same file she had shown the girl next to her.

Lexi flipped through it and nodded. “Not bad. You’ll work. Come with me.”

Suzie was taken aback but followed Lexi to her office under the watchful eyes of everyone in the room.

Once inside, Lexi sank into her office chair and spoke to Suzie in a flat tone. “You just started today, right? Your portfolio shows you’re an experienced photographer, so I shouldn’t have to explain how things work on a shoot, should I?”

Suzie nodded.

Lexi continued, “For newcomers, learning on site is one thing, but you can’t expect to do nothing. You’ll probably have to handle some of the assistant’s duties as well.”

Suzie frowned at that. She knew all too well how exhausting being a photographer’s assistant was. It wasn’t just helping to carry, set up, and adjust equipment; it often involved building sets, arranging props, and helping models with wardrobe changes.

Every single task was physically demanding. Suzie immediately thought of the babies in her womb. Call her entitled or ungrateful, but she simply couldn’t handle that kind of work right now.

After a moment of silence, Suzie replied, “I’m sorry, Lexi. Thank you for thinking so highly of me, but due to a health issue, I’m afraid I can’t do any physical labor. I made this clear to the boss when I was hired.”

Lexi’s expression soured the moment Suzie refused, and she didn’t bother listening to the rest of the explanation.

Lexi’s eyes bore into Suzie, hard and fierce. “Go out there and tell them you weren’t good enough. Do you hear me?” she commanded.

Despite her aggressive stance, Suzie’s reply was still even. “I hear you, but I won’t do it.”

“You—!”

Just as Lexi raised her finger to point at Suzie, the office door was pushed open from the outside.

“Who walks into my office without knocking?” Lexi snapped, her eyes still fixed on Suzie, not even glancing toward the door.

“What’s got you so worked up?” Harrison strolled in, one hand in his pocket. He gave Suzie a slight nod before turning his attention to Lexi.
