Stella gently pushed Suzie back into the cushions. "I'll handle it."

When Stella saw the name Celia Miller flashing on the screen, she knew Suzie's instinct was dead on. Knowing Suzie was on the verge of a panic attack, Stella swiped to answer. "Hello?"

Before she could get another syllable out, an ear-piercing shriek blasted through the speaker.

"Suzie Sterling, you have a lot of nerve! You bring my precious grandchildren to me this instant! Do you hear me? Right now!"

Stella rolled her eyes. Yep, that was the monster-in-law.

"Sorry, lady. I think you've got the wrong number," Stella said in a bored drawl.

"What? Wrong number? But I saved this exactly..." The voice faded as the woman presumably pulled the phone away to check the screen.

Stella instantly hung up. Suzie had crept up beside her, eyes wide. Stella didn't sugarcoat it; she repeated the demand word for word. "Don't panic," she added fiercely. "You've got me, and you've got the Wycliffe family backing you now. She can't touch you."

The phone rang again. Same caller ID.

Stella glanced at it. "You don't have to answer. Let it ring. Or better yet, turn it off."

Suzie didn't answer it, nor did she decline the call. She just flipped the phone to silent and watched the screen light up over and over again.
