Lost in her spiraling anxiety, her phone suddenly lit up with an incoming call from Jamie.
Suzie's hand hovered over the screen, her fingers trembling. She couldn't bring herself to swipe 'answer'. She was terrified he was calling to demand the kids, or worse, to tell her his lawyers would be in touch.
She let it ring until it went to voicemail. He called again. Again, she stared at the screen until it went dark.
A second later, a text popped up:
'Suzie, open the door. I'm outside.'
Her heart slammed against her ribs. Was he here to take them by force?
Her thumbs flew across the keyboard: 'I'm not home.'
The second the message sent, the doorbell rang. Panic seized her. She could hear Zelina's footsteps heading down the hall to answer it.
The kids! The kids were in the playroom!
Suzie sprinted out of her bedroom and bolted down the hall. She threw herself into the playroom, slamming the door shut behind her and twisting the deadbolt.
Jamie walked through the front door just in time to see her lock herself in.
He recognized the door to the playroom. Given the sheer panic in her sprint, he knew exactly what was going through her mind.
He let out a heavy sigh and turned to Zelina. "Please tell Ms. Sterling I'll be waiting for her in the study."
"Right away, sir," Zelina said, hurrying over to knock on the playroom door.
