Margaret wiped her tears away and continued her earnest plea. “You said you two had a falling out because of that Chloe woman, right? Well, look now. It’s been so long since the divorce, and he hasn’t married her. He hasn’t even publicly acknowledged their relationship. Doesn’t that prove he still has feelings for you?”
Just hearing Jamie’s name made Suzie go cold, dragging her back to the horrifying morning he had sent people to the hospital to force her into an abortion. Even standing in the hot sun, she felt cold and deeply unsettled.
“Fine,” Suzie said quickly, desperate to escape. “I’ll think about what you said. I have something urgent to do right now, so you should go home.”
To get Margaret to leave, she had no choice but to humor her, her tone growing warmer.
It worked. Margaret’s face lit up, and she let go of Suzie’s arm, pulling a securely wrapped rectangular object from her bag. “Suzie, this is your favorite homemade strawberry jam. I made them and brought them right over. Let me know when you finish them. And remember to come home for a visit when you have time. I’ll be waiting for your good news.”
Suzie had no desire for it, but to get away, she reached out and took the container. “Okay. The bus is here, you should get on.”
As she spoke, Suzie flagged down the approaching bus and gestured for Margaret to board, maintaining a gentle expression.
Margaret looked back every few steps, her eyes still filled with a trace of suspicion, but she seemed to have run out of reasons to keep pestering Suzie.
Suzie turned to face Margaret’s contorted, furious expression, a wave of fear washing over her. Her first thought was that Margaret was about to attack her. She was alone, her body felt heavy and tired, and she had no strength to fight back.
Every nerve in Suzie’s body tensed as she anticipated the assault, instinctively pulling her bag in front of her to shield her stomach.
On the busy road, a Bentley was stuck in a long line of traffic. Aaron, in the driver’s seat, anxiously scanned the road. Jamie had an important meeting, and now they were going to be late.
As his eyes darted around, he was drawn to a commotion on the sidewalk. He squinted, and his eyes widened in shock.
