In the span of three seconds, Chloe’s entire demeanor shifted from arrogant and domineering to weak and pitiful. Then, she burst into delicate sobs.
What? Shouldn’t Chloe have fired back with an even sharper retort? Where had all her earlier bravado gone?
As Suzie puzzled over this sudden transformation, she heard Chloe say tearfully, “Jamie, she…”
Chloe dabbed at her eyes while swaying closer to Jamie, who had just walked back into the room.
Suzie stood speechless. The next thing she heard was Jamie’s voice, uncharacteristically gentle. “Don’t cry.”
Then, she watched as Jamie walked to his desk, pulled a tissue, and handed it to Chloe. As he turned, Chloe shot Suzie a triumphant glare.
A sharp, needle-like pain pierced Suzie’s heart. He had never comforted her like that. In fact, whenever she was in a bad mood or showed the slightest hint of unhappiness, he would grow impatient. Yet with Chloe, he was the picture of tenderness.
They were a classic pair of cheating lowlifes!
The agreement was signed, but the divorce wasn't final yet, was it? And what had they been doing behind her back all this time?
Suppressing a burning rage, Suzie stood tall, waiting. She was morbidly curious to see what kind of insults Jamie would hurl at her to defend his so-called lover.
After a moment, Chloe’s crying subsided. Jamie finally turned back to Suzie, his expression shifting instantly back to its previous coldness. “Suzie, apologize to Chloe.”
“Playing pretend again?”
As Suzie collapsed, the last thing she heard was his impossibly cold voice.
Then, Aaron’s panicked shout echoed in her ears. “Mr. Baylor, I think her blood sugar is really low!”
Her vision blurred, and she suddenly felt her body go light, as if she were floating. A familiar, clean scent filled her senses. Was it him? Had he caught her?
A fresh sting of tears pricked her eyes just before everything went black.
