Aaron frowned, taking the ledger and snapping a picture of the address with his phone. “Whatever he sets his mind to, no one can stop him,” he said quietly. “Just let him be.”
With the address secured, Aaron hurried back to the living room. “Mr. Baylor, I’ve sent the address to your phone. However, the housekeeper mentioned that getting to Martha’s home might be quite an ordeal.”
Jamie glanced at his phone, scrolling through the address, and paid no mind to Aaron’s warning. After a moment of silence, he said, “Cancel all my appointments. We’re leaving now.”
Aaron’s face fell, his brow furrowing with concern. “But, Mr. Baylor, you have several very important meetings these next few days. Baylor Group can’t function without you.”
Jamie stood up dismissively and started walking toward the door. “Tell me,” he shot back, “when is there ever a day the corporation *can* do without me?”
He threw a sharp glare at Aaron before continuing toward the exit.
“Hire another driver,” Jamie commanded without turning back. “He’ll drive, and you’ll handle business from the car.”
“Yes, Mr. Baylor,” Aaron replied, left with no time to think and no grounds to object. He could only hurry to keep up.
Three days later, Suzie finally felt some of her physical and mental exhaustion begin to fade. The ache in her heart was a little less raw. For three days, Stella had stayed home to care for her.
As she spoke, she met the saleswoman’s gaze with a calm, dignified air that seemed to momentarily throw the woman off balance. The saleswoman arched an eyebrow and walked reluctantly toward Suzie, her disdainful eyes scanning the simple cotton dress, nondescript bag, and plain shoes Suzie was wearing.
“Perhaps you should look at the price tag first,” the saleswoman said with a sneer, stopping beside her. “After all, it would be quite embarrassing if you dirtied it and then couldn't afford it, wouldn’t it?”
Suzie saw the judgment in the woman's eyes. She had heard of and encountered saleswomen like this before. Even when she was Mrs. Baylor, she had dressed simply and often faced the same treatment.
She calmly lowered her arm, about to say something, when a sharp voice rang out from the entrance.
