A bitter smile touched Suzie’s lips, but when she looked at Aaron, her eyes were calm and distant.
Every visible inch of Aaron’s skin was also covered in various cuts and bruises. Whatever had happened, it had clearly been bad. But that had nothing to do with her, either.
Suzie didn’t ask any questions. She didn’t say a word. She simply gave Aaron a slight nod—a polite but cool acknowledgment—and turned to walk back toward the planters.
“Ms. Sterling!” Aaron’s hoarse voice called out from behind her.
Suzie heard him but didn’t stop. Instead, she walked faster.
Seeing this, Aaron didn’t hesitate. He ran to block her path.
Suzie slowly lifted her head and looked at the sweat-drenched man, her expression unreadable. “Aaron, I don't want to know or care about anything related to him. You don't have to say a word.”
Aaron lowered his head, crestfallen, trying to find the right words. When he saw her about to leave again, he called out to her retreating back, “Mrs. Baylor! In everyone's heart, you are still Mrs. Baylor. Especially in Mr. Baylor's eyes.”
Suzie’s steps faltered for a fraction of a second, then she resolutely continued on.
This time, Aaron grew truly desperate. He raised his voice and shouted, “Mr. Baylor… he's in this state because of you!”
And even if he confirmed it, so what? What was he trying to do?
…
Aaron watched the silent woman, then cleared his throat and sighed. “Mrs. Baylor, Mr. Baylor… he cares about you. There must be some kind of misunderstanding between you two…”
“Misunderstanding?” Suzie looked up, her expression dazed, but her voice was steady and sharp. “Do you remember when I was lying in the emergency room, and you came to deliver the divorce papers? Do you remember when I went to his office, and he grabbed my jaw and forced me to apologize to Chloe? Do you remember him humiliating me again and again? Accusing me of being a gold digger, of cheating on him…”
