Their Punching Bag Became The Storm novel Chapter 143

Chapter 143 The Future Mistress

Chapter 143 The Future Mistress

Ryan said, “So, my mom left. She didn’t even want me. She walked away without a second thought. “She only left behind half of the brooch, then disappeared without a trace.

“Maybe I was never the kind of kid she could love. That’s probably why she left me so easily.”

Ryan’s voice was low, and as he lowered his gaze, a hint of loneliness showed in his dark eyes.

With his head drooping like a big, sad puppy, he looked so pitiful that Whitney wanted to reach out and ruffle/his hair. That was exactly what crossed Whitney’s mind. So, she went ahead and did it.

She reached out, her slender fingers gently ruffling Ryan’s hair.

‘How am I supposed to comfort him?’ she wondered.

If she tried to say something like. A mother would never give up on her child, no matter what; coming from her, nobody would buy it.

After all, her own mother had abandoned her without a second thought. That kind of reassurance wouldn’t mean much. Whitney thought for a moment, then ruffled Ryan’s hair again. “Don’t worry. Now that the brooch is whole, it probably won’t be long before you get to see your mom.

“When that happens, you can ask her face-to-face why she left

you.”

Honestly, asking the person yourself is the best way to finally get the answers you want.

Ryan lifted his head, feeling the gentle touch in his hair. The loneliness in his eyes faded, replaced by a soft smile. “Do you know what this brooch really means?”

Even as he looked up, Whitney’s hand stayed on his head. “What?”

“When my mom left, the brooch was whole. But by the time it got to me, only half was left,” Ryan said, holding up the two pieces he’d finally managed to fit together.

The brooch shimmered, crystal clear and flawless, with a color and texture that looked absolutely perfect.

In Ryan’s long, pale fingers, it looked even more stunning, almost unreal.

Seeing it like this, the contrast was striking.

It was like those lines in novels, talking about skin like porcelain and beauty topic.

as

pure as a white pearl. It seemed a little off

Whitney pulled her gaze away, trying not to get lost in Ryan’s looks, and put on a serious face. “So, how did half of your mom’s brooch end up with me?”

She thought, ‘Wait, scratch that. It was actually with my mentor. Then he passed it to me and told me to go reconnect with the Pierce family.

Ryan’s lips slowly curled into a smile, and a playful glint appeared at the comers of his dark, noble eyes. “Because whoever holds the other half of the brooch is supposed to be the future mistress of the Pierce family.”

“What is that supposed to mean?’ Whitney thought, feeling her mind go blank.

Ryan spelled it out for her. “The one who holds the other half of the brooch is my fated partner. The person destiny has chosen for me.”

Whitney was even more confused now.

When it finally clicked, her eyes went wide, and she stared at Ryan in utter shock.

Whitney thought, ‘His soulmate? Could my mentor really be the one destined for Ryan?

‘And she’s going to be the future mistress of the Pierce family? This is insane. The Pierce family sure knows how to make things interesting.’

Whitney mentally gave Ryan’s dad a big thumbs-up.

‘He’s really open-minded. He doesn’t even mind the gender or the age difference?’ she thought.

Whitney asked, “So, you’re actually going to stick to your family’s tradition and be with whoever owns the other half of the brooch?”

Ryan hadn’t expected Whitney to be so blunt.

He thought her reaction was pretty weird. Most girls would get all shy or excited if they found out they were his fated

partner, but Whitney didn’t show any of that.

But Whitney? She looked at him with a face full of admiration and even gave him a thumbs-up. Ryan honestly had no idea what to make of that.

Ryan thought back to what he’d said, making sure he hadn’t messed up his meaning, then spoke up. “Honestly, I never really believed in the whole fated partner thing.

“But that all changed when you showed me your half of the brooch.”

He thought, ‘Come on, I couldn’t have made it any clearer, right?’

He’d basically put his feelings out there, plain as day.

But Whitney totally missed what he was getting at.

She assumed he was only starting to buy into the whole fated partner legend because she happened to have the other half of the brooch.

Whitney, couldn’t help but picture her mentor with her silver hair and almost sixty years on her, standing next to Ryan. She shivered. ‘I can’t let myself imagine that anymore. If I keep thinking about it, I’ll get seriously creeped out.’

Whitney felt she really needed to have a serious heart-to-heart with Ryan and rescue this poor guy who was being dragged around by his family’s old rules.

But before she could even get her words of advice out, Ryan’s usually noble eyes were suddenly tinged with disappointment. “You don’t want to?”

Whitney thought, ‘It’s not really about what I want, is it? It’s the age and gender thing. It’s honestly way too weird.” Whitney’s face was a mess of emotions.

Ryan’s heart sank a little, but he still managed a smile. “It’s fine. Like you said, now that the brooch is whole, maybe I’ll finally get to see my mom.”

Seeing that Ryan wasn’t going to keep pushing the whole family tradition, Whitney let out a sigh of relief and nodded quickly. “Yeah, yeah, that’s the spirit. Glad you finally see it that way.”

But no matter how she looked at it, there was no hiding how forced Ryan’s smile was.

Whitney thought Ryan was way too obsessed with this whole family tradition. He really had no idea actually was.

big a deal this

She thought, ‘Why was he so fixated on it? He was seriously about to throw away his whole shot at happiness. ‘Honestly, wouldn’t it be a million times better to get a girlfriend than end up spending your life with some cranky old man?’ But Whitney figured it was better not to push the topic any further, so she steered the conversation back to the brooch. She said, “My mentor told me to bring this brooch to the Pierce family, and that you guys would keep me safe. “I’m guessing the guy in black I ran into. He’s probably after my mentor.”

So, if she ever ran into that guy in black, it was all her mentor’s fault. It had nothing to do with Ryan at all. It really had nothing to do with Ryan dragging her into this mess.

As she spoke, Whitney grew a bit curious. “Do you know my mentor?”

Ryan held the brooch, his fingers gently tracing over its surface. “Is your mentor the old man I saw in that family photo?”

Whitney nodded. Ryan shook his head. “I’ve never met him.”

‘Wait, he’s never even met him. Then how did my mentor get his hands on this brooch? And why would he want me to bring it to the Pierce family?’ she wondered.

She’d actually hoped Ryan might have some clues about her mentor’s disappearance.

‘Figures. Guys really are hopeless when it comes to this stuff, Whitney thought.

If she wanted to find her mentor, she’d have to do it herself. The brooch was really a signal to Ryan that they were in this together. That’s all there was to it.

Seeing Whitney with her eyes downcast, lost in thought, Ryan gently handed her half of the brooch. “Even if you hadn’t shown me the brooch, the Pierce family would still stand behind you.

Whitney didn’t take it. “You should keep your mother’s brooch.”

Ryan insisted, “This half belongs to you.”

Her mentor had only told her to bring the brooch with her when she went to see the Pierce family. He never said whether

she was supposed to hand it over or keep it herself.

But the look in Ryan’s eyes left no room for argument.

Whitney finally reached out and took the brooch from him.

Ryan’s eyes crinkled at the corners, and his handsome face lit up with real joy.
