"Drunk?" Hugo looked bewildered. "Didn't she invite me to dinner? How did she manage to pass out before I even got here?"
Willow let out an awkward laugh, scrambling to cover for her friend. "Jade didn't do it on purpose. She was just a little nervous and accidentally overdid it."
"Nervous?" Hugo smoothly caught the key word. "She was nervous to see me?"
Realizing she was digging a deeper hole, Willow firmly changed the subject. "I'm so sorry. We were supposed to treat you to dinner, but given the circumstances, I need to get her home. Do you want to stay and eat, or should we leave together and take a raincheck?"
Hugo obviously decided to leave; he hadn't come for the food anyway. "I drove. I'll give you two a ride."
"That's okay, we can just grab a cab," Willow quickly declined. Even though Hugo wasn't her boss, making an invited guest act as their chauffeur felt incredibly rude.
But Hugo wasn't taking no for an answer. He walked straight over to Jade and pulled her up. "In her condition, you're not going to be able to handle her alone."
Looking at Jade, Willow realized he had a point. It was better to rely on someone they knew. She stopped fighting it. "Thank you for the trouble."
Jade was an absolute handful. On the way to the parking garage, her hands were everywhere—poking here, grabbing there. A short walk ended up taking over ten minutes. Plus, she had a surprising amount of drunk strength. Willow noticed Hugo struggling to keep her upright a few times. She was suddenly very grateful she had accepted his help; she never could have managed Jade on her own.
