Just as Willow was about to breathe a sigh of relief, Jade started acting up again. "I feel awful."
"I know, you're drunk. It's normal to feel bad. Just hang in there, we'll be home soon." Willow smoothed the loose hair away from her friend's face, speaking in a soothing voice.
At the mention of going home, Jade threw a fit. "I don't want to go home. I have to buy Hugo dinner. Is he here yet?"
"He's here, he's here. He already ate and left," Willow coaxed, using the tone one might use on a toddler.
In the driver's seat, Hugo's gaze instantly darted to the rearview mirror the moment he heard his name.
She usually seemed so sharp and professional. He never expected her to be like this when she was drunk. Leaning against Willow's shoulder, all her prickly defenses were gone. Her eyes were soft and unfocused, like a little beast that had let its guard down. The contrast was startling.
He grabbed a wet wipe from the center console and handed it back to Willow. "Wipe her face. It might help her feel better."
"Thank you." Willow took it, but the second the wipe touched Jade's cheek, she swatted it away. "What is that? It feels weird. Get it off me."
Before Willow could calm her down, Jade blurted out, "So annoying. Almost as annoying as Hugo. I am never buying him dinner again."
Willow had completely failed to anticipate that outburst. By the time she scrambled to cover Jade's mouth, the damage was done. She offered Hugo a deeply apologetic smile. "I am so sorry. She's just drunk and talking nonsense. Please don't take it personally."
Hugo glanced at Jade in the rearview mirror, his expression unreadable. "Just take care of her."
