Before Vivienne was an endless expanse of pitch-black darkness, so thick it felt suffocating. There was no light, no way to distinguish day from night, only a deafening silence that slowly crushed whatever shreds of hope she had left.
Just as a wave of dizzying exhaustion hit her, threatening to pull her under, a faint rustling sound echoed near her feet.
It was soft, but in the dead silence of the cave, it was piercing.
Vivienne went entirely rigid, her frayed nerves snapping. The darkness magnified her terror tenfold. Panicking, she reached out with a numb hand, blindly swatting at the direction of the noise to figure out what it was.
The moment her fingers brushed against it, she felt something cold, slimy, and squirming with a sickening warmth.
"Ahhhhh!"
A blood-curdling scream tore from her throat. Her pupils dilated in sheer terror, her blood freezing in her veins.
It was a rat!
A scrawny, wild rat had been huddled right next to her, and startled by her touch, it frantically scurried over her hand.
Absolute panic consumed her. She violently yanked her hand back, her entire body seizing with violent tremors. A wave of intense nausea clawed up her throat, her empty stomach violently rebelling, nearly making her vomit dry acid.
She had always been terrified of creeping pests. Raised in luxury and pristine environments, she had never been subjected to anything this vile. Her scalp tingled, an icy dread shooting from her toes to the top of her head, and tears of pure terror spilled down her cheeks.
Fear, resentment, and utter despair crashed over her, threatening to swallow her whole.
But a second later, agonizing hunger pangs ripped through her stomach. She was completely empty.
She was trapped here. Nobody knew, and nobody was coming. The cave was a barren wasteland of cold stone and rotting moss. There was absolutely nothing to eat. If she didn't consume something soon, she was going to freeze and starve to death in this pitch-black hell.
It was a choice between dying and facing her ultimate nightmare.
