But she had no choice. She couldn't just ignore her grandson, so she begrudgingly drove over in the dead of night.
The moment she pushed open the doors to Julian's mansion, a piercing, hysterical wail assaulted her ears. Susannah instantly felt a headache coming on.
Frowning deeply, she marched into the living room, knelt beside Toby, and forced her voice into a soothing tone. "Toby, sweetheart, stop crying, okay? Mommy just has some work to do. She'll be home soon."
But Toby was beyond reason. Stubborn and volatile, he refused to listen to anyone. He grabbed handfuls of Susannah's clothes, screaming even louder. "Liar! Mommy hasn't been home in forever! I want her! I want her right now!"
His shrieks echoed endlessly through the massive house. Within minutes, whatever shred of patience Susannah had left was obliterated.
Done playing the doting grandmother, she pulled out her phone and called Julian, her tone dripping with annoyance. "Julian, when exactly is Vivienne coming back? Toby has been screaming since the afternoon, and no one can stop him. If he keeps this up, he's going to hyperventilate."
On the other end of the line, Julian was still buried in paperwork. He brushed off the complaint, his voice casually dismissive. "She went out of town for business. She'll be back in a few days."
"A few days?" Susannah was not accepting that vague answer. Her voice turned sharp. "Don't play games with me! Can you hear him screaming? Where exactly did she go? She's been gone for days without a single text or call to her son. Is that normal? Call her right now. I need an exact time she's walking through that door!"
