She had always been a deeply prideful person, incapable of tolerating anyone viewing her as anything less than perfect. Her solution was to simply vanish and keep out of sight.
Naturally, during her time at the hospital, almost no one came to visit her. Aside from Toby dropping by occasionally with the nanny, she was entirely alone. Julian certainly hadn't shown up. He hadn't even bothered with a perfunctory text or a routine phone call.
Vivienne spent her days steeped in anxiety, terrified that Julian's resentment toward her was growing, making her situation even more unsalvageable. Consequently, she was constantly in a foul mood.
On the fourth day, someone finally arrived. Vivienne briefly fantasized it might be Julian, but the moment the door swung open, her heart plummeted. It was the absolute last person she wanted to see: Jayden Chase.
Already depressed, his appearance tipped her into pure irritation. She had shut herself in to avoid drama, yet here was an uninvited guest, going out of his way to ruin her day.
Jayden seemed completely unbothered by her icy reception. Moving with a relaxed familiarity, he carried an elegant fruit basket and a bouquet of blooming champagne roses. He strolled up to the bed, set the items on the nightstand, and flashed a lazy grin. "What's the matter? Aren't you happy to see me? You don't look so good."
Vivienne lazily lifted her eyelids, her tone distant and detached. "I'm doing perfectly fine. No need to trouble yourself."
Acting as if he didn't sense her repulsion, Jayden pulled up a chair and sat down. Taking his time, he began rambling about the latest gossip at the firm, gleefully filling her in on every excruciating detail of the Merit project's recent developments.
He talked about how Mr. Smith had taken over her position, negotiated a new partnership plan, and how pleased Merit was with him. The summit was proceeding exactly as scheduled, and so on...
Every word was a surgical strike at Vivienne's most humiliating, vulnerable wounds.
