She had given him her heart a long time ago.
But she was still legally married to Julian Sinclair. Her divorce was pending, and she was still weighed down by the ugly, chaotic chains of her past.
She didn't dare make Silas any promises just yet.
When Willow remained silent, Silas's anxiety spiked.
He was terrified of rejection, terrified she would pull away, terrified that this love he had nurtured for years would ultimately end in heartbreak.
But he couldn't bear to pressure her. Forcing down his rising panic, he softened his tone. "It's okay. I won't force you to answer. Just tell me... do you hate me?"
Willow's eyelashes fluttered, and she shook her head without hesitation.
"Are you disgusted by me?" Silas asked, his tension easing slightly.
She shook her head again, her gaze clear and steady.
Two denials down. He asked his final question, his heart in his throat. "Are you afraid of me?"
"Of course not," Willow replied, finally breaking her silence to voice the denial.
Three consecutive rejections of the negative. The rigid line of Silas's shoulders instantly relaxed, and the heavy boulder pressing on his chest shattered. It felt as if he could finally breathe again. The tight lines around his eyes smoothed out, replaced by a soft, glowing warmth.
He leaned down, resting his forehead against hers. His voice was a gentle, relieved whisper. "You don't hate me, you aren't disgusted by me, and you aren't afraid of me. Can I take that to mean you like me?"
This time, Willow didn't shake her head.
