Julian's brow twitched violently.
His first instinct was sheer panic that she would get burned by the licking flames.
He strode over quickly to stop her.
"Clara! What are you doing? Step away from the fire!"
Hearing his voice, Clara's body stiffened in a near-instinctive trauma response, a numb, lingering ache blooming in her chest...
She bit her lip hard to stop her body from trembling.
She had no idea why he was back so suddenly. Without turning around, she continued to burn the items in her hands. Right in front of him, she tossed the jade bracelet he had gifted her straight into the flames...
Julian watched in stunned disbelief as the bracelet disappeared into the fire.
She used to cherish that bracelet more than anything.
Why would she...
"Clara..." His voice came out hoarse as he walked over and crouched beside her. "What... are you burning..."
He convinced himself he was seeing things.
Illuminated by the firelight, Clara's eyes were still swollen and bloodshot. She let out a hollow laugh. "Nothing. Just some trash I don't want anymore..."
Julian felt as if he was suffocating, a heavy lump forming in his throat. He looked at the roaring flames, then back at the fragile girl beside him...
He would have to be an absolute fool not to realize how furious she truly was this time.
"I'm sorry..." He leaned in close, taking on an incredibly intimate posture as he murmured near her ear. "I was wrong about what happened today."
"It doesn't matter that you burned all these things. Just treat it as venting your anger. I'll buy you new ones later, even better ones. Or you can take your anger out on me. Hit me, curse at me, whatever you want..."
Clara listened in a daze.
He was actually saying he would buy her new things...
Ha, was he still trying to play her?
She turned to look at him, her eyes filled with a soul-crushing despair.
Yet the man looked entirely serious, not as if he were lying at all.
It was as if all the gifts he had given her before were actually genuine!
What a spectacular actor.
Clara forced a faint smile, deciding to play along.
"Sure..."
Let him buy them. Fake or real, it didn't matter anymore.
After all, she would be leaving in a few days anyway. At most, she would stay in Capital City until the preliminaries were over.
