Clara's expression froze. Suddenly, the food in her mouth tasted like ash.
She set down her fork, her appetite completely gone. She didn't want to look at the photo anymore and scrolled past it.
But in that split second, her eyes caught something.
She noticed a plate of BBQ ribs in the picture, along with a few side dishes. They were exactly the same as the takeout he had brought her!
Clara’s pupils dilated. A loud, ringing buzz exploded in her head.
With trembling, stiff fingers, she tapped the photo to enlarge it.
She hadn't been seeing things. It was exactly the same.
Which meant Julian had packed her lunch based entirely on Seraphina's cravings.
Clara furrowed her brow. She stared at the screen, then glanced at the takeout container on her desk. Unable to stomach another second of it, she slammed her phone down, bolted out of the office, and sprinted to the restroom. She wrenched on the faucet and began to dry heave.
It was absolutely revolting!
How could Julian be so incredibly twisted?
Clara gripped the edges of the sink, her knuckles turning white. She gagged repeatedly, her empty stomach violently cramping until she was practically throwing up bile. She looked like a total mess.
When she finally lifted her head, her shoulders trembled with misery.
She stared at her pale, haggard reflection in the mirror. A bitter wave of nausea washed over her chest, and suddenly, she let out a hollow laugh.
Her lips quivered as a hoarse whisper escaped her throat. "Have you actually lived a single good day in these past three years?"
The answer was a resounding no.
For three years, she had either been buried in work or pouring all her energy into taking care of Julian. She had reduced herself to nothing more than a glorified maid.
And in the end? Not only did she get nothing in return, but she had also nearly lost herself entirely.
Clara gripped the countertop tighter, her eyes stinging with unshed tears. After a long moment, she bowed her head and splashed freezing water onto her face.
The icy shock brought her back to her senses.
It only solidified her absolute resolve: she was going to leave Julian and make her comeback in the design world.
...
When she returned to her office, her phone was buzzing on the desk.
