"Clara, we had amazing times together, didn't we? Just a few weeks ago, we were so happy..."
A sudden sting of emotion pricked the back of Clara's eyes.
But it vanished just as quickly as it came.
She absolutely refused to be manipulated by him again.
Just as she opened her mouth to speak...
A sharp ringtone shattered the tension in the room.
It was Julian's phone.
Julian frowned in annoyance.
Clara jammed her elbow into his ribs. "Answer your phone," she urged.
Julian gave her a knowing look, well aware she was just looking for a chance to bolt. Keeping his right arm locked tight around her waist, he fished the phone out of his pocket with his free hand and answered it, never once taking his eyes off her.
Furious, Clara dug her nails into his arm.
Julian winced slightly but didn't loosen his hold by a single fraction.
Isabella was on the other end of the line.
Her voice was laced with frantic urgency. "Where are you right now? Are you busy at the office?"
Assuming his mother was just calling to drag him back to the estate for that setup with Beatrice, Julian's expression turned glacial.
"I'm occupied. I won't be back for lunch. I'll reach out to Mr. Hamilton later to explain the situation."
"No, it's not that!"
Isabella cut him off in a panic. "This has nothing to do with Beatrice! Your grandmother just suffered a massive heart attack. She's in the hospital and it's critical. The doctors aren't sure she's going to make it. You need to get here immediately!"
Julian's entire demeanor instantly shifted to dead serious. "What? What happened?"
Clara froze as well.
Ceasing her struggle, her face went deathly pale as she stared at the phone in pure disbelief.
Isabella wished she knew what caused it, too.
Had she known Eleanor was going to suffer a heart attack today, she would have pushed back the lunch with Beatrice and fast-tracked her plans to get rid of Clara days ago!
Now everything was a total disaster.
