Capital City General Hospital.
By the time Julian and Clara arrived, Isabella was already waiting in the hallway. "I don't care how toxic things are between you two right now," she hissed, pulling them aside. "When you walk into that room, you had better put on a flawless show for everyone inside."
She shot Clara a venomous, sideways glare.
Clara knew that warning was aimed entirely at her. She tightened her jaw, swallowing her resentment to keep the peace.
Julian cast his mother a dark, inscrutable look.
Isabella simply scoffed and looked away. "Enough. Get inside."
Clara took a deep, steadying breath and followed them in.
Inside the VIP suite.
A group of influential socialites and executives were seated on the plush sofas in the lounge area, murmuring sympathetically about Eleanor's condition. Spotting the couple, one of them sighed softly. "You're here. Come, sit down."
Julian gave a polite nod. Taking the initiative, he grabbed Clara's hand and led her over to the couch. He immediately engaged in conversation with one of the executives, but his grip on Clara's hand remained firm and unyielding.
Clara bit the inside of her lip.
Was it really necessary to take the act this far?
Mrs. Lawson poured them two cups of tea, her eyes softening as she noted their intertwined fingers. She couldn't help but sigh wistfully.
"You two have been together for three years now, and you're still so devoted to each other. You really should just tie the knot! It would bring Eleanor so much joy, and who knows, some good news might be exactly what she needs to pull through."
"Exactly. Julian is turning twenty-eight this year. It's time to settle down."
The rest of the room chimed in with agreement.
Clara sat stiffly, forcing herself to endure the agonizing conversation. She shot Julian a desperate look, silently begging him to come up with a polite excuse to shut the topic down.
Instead, the man simply rubbed his thumb soothingly over the back of her hand and smiled. "That sounds like a wonderful idea."
Clara's eyes widened in sheer horror.
Did he even realize what he just agreed to?
Making a statement like that meant the gossip would spread through their entire social circle by nightfall. What on earth was she supposed to do then?
