But speaking up now would only drag her deeper into the mud.
She was forced to remain silent.
Over by the pavilion railing, Dominic stood tall and detached, quietly observing the chaos. He took a drag from his cigarette, the pale smoke rising like a veil over his sharp, unreadable features.
Phoebe's expression remained glacial. She wasn't about to buy Seraphina's defense just because she looked panicked.
Seraphina's voice caught in her throat. Her delicate face contorted into a mask of pure distress. She looked like a terrified, cornered deer—an act so flawless it practically demanded sympathy.
Suddenly, her eyes lit up as if she had just remembered something. She pointed desperately at one of the older maids.
"She can vouch for me! She saw me go into the restroom! I didn't go anywhere else!"
Phoebe shot a cold look at the maid.
"Is that true, Martha?"
Martha had been working at the estate for five years. She was a reliable, grounded woman whom Phoebe generally trusted.
Martha recognized Seraphina and gave an honest nod.
"Yes, ma'am. I saw her go into the restroom, and she came straight back out afterward. She never went near the arboretum..."
Phoebe pressed her lips into a tight line, her expression darkening further.
Seraphina pressed her advantage. "Ms. Shaw, I know how much those flowers mean to you. Why would I ever destroy them? If you still don't believe me, you can have someone search me right now!"
Phoebe's gaze grew heavier. She ignored Seraphina's theatrics and turned her piercing eyes squarely on Clara.
"Clara. Explain yourself."
From the shadows of the pavilion, Dominic also shifted his gaze to Clara, his eyes narrowing slightly.
Clara met Phoebe's furious stare, then caught the subtle, triumphant smirk playing on Seraphina's lips. Her fingers curled into tight fists.
She finally understood.
Seraphina had orchestrated this entire nightmare just to bury her.
"Ms. Shaw..."
Right at that moment, another maid suddenly spoke up.
"When we were rushing to put out the fire, we saw Ms. Vance standing completely alone near the garden. We didn't know what she was doing."
