With that thought, Julian caught the small hand resting against his cheek, stopping her from caressing him further.
He chuckled and said gently, "It's nothing. I just have some business at the company later. I have to go."
Clara's heart softened. Though she felt a twinge of inevitable disappointment, the sweetness of the moment lingered.
Without a shred of suspicion, she hugged him gently. "It's okay, your career comes first. Go handle your work."
Her docility made Julian lose a bit of his restraint. He pressed a kiss to the corner of her lips. "How did I get so lucky with you? What am I going to do... I haven't even left yet, and I already miss you."
He couldn't even tell where the lies ended and the truth began anymore.
A blush crept across Clara's face. Unable to withstand his teasing, she buried her head in the crook of his neck and whispered, "Stop looking at me like that..."
Her adorable shyness pushed Julian to the edge of his control. He couldn't resist running his hands up and down her slender waist.
Driven by sheer physical instinct, he wanted her.
But he hadn't forgotten his real agenda.
Swallowing back the heat, he exhaled a heavy breath, set her down, and lowered his voice.
"It's getting late. I need to go. Call me if you need anything."
Clara sat on the edge of the sofa, her face still flushed as she nodded. The burning heat from his palms still lingered on her skin.
Julian stood up, straightened his dress shirt, and slipped on his suit jacket. Before heading for the door, he pinched her cheek affectionately.
In that moment, Clara was suddenly overwhelmed with reluctance. She wrapped her arms around his waist, pressing her face tightly against his chest. "Come back early..." she murmured.
Julian felt a sudden tug at his heartstrings.
With her acting so sweet, he couldn't just walk away coldly.
After a brief pause, he tilted her chin up. "How about we go back to that restaurant tonight to celebrate our anniversary? Let me make up for last time."
Clara was stunned, but a wave of pure joy quickly washed over her. She thought he had completely forgotten about it, yet he had remembered all along.
"Okay."
Julian smiled.
Right on cue, his phone rang again—a clear reminder to hurry up.
Julian stroked her cheek one last time and left.
Clara walked him to the door, hating to see him go. She figured this was how every girl hopelessly in love felt when saying goodbye.
