Chapter 4
It was dark by the time I finally heard anything from him-he never even bothered to look for me or check if I was okay.
I had to drag myself down the mountain with my badly injured leg, step by agonizing step, before an ambulance finally came to get me.
They’d all left the mountain hours ago. Not one phone call.
It wasn’t until late that night that Daniel finally remembered I existed.
The moment he called, he immediately started complaining.
“Zelda, where the hell are you?”
Hearing that, I let out a bitter laugh and shook my head.
“Shouldn’t I be the one asking you that?”
“You went to take a piss and just vanished into thin air? If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were off doing God knows what.”
All the anger I’d been holding back finally started pouring out.
“What’s that supposed to mean? Are you accusing me of cheating on you? I came back to find you after I was done, but you were gone. I looked everywhere for you, and then I lost cell service.”
“I was panicking, worried sick about you. That’s how I hurt my leg.”
Ha. He hurt his leg looking for me? What a fucking joke.
After I told him where I was, it took less than thirty minutes for him to limp into my hospital room, with Sophia and his asshole friends trailing
behind.
Seeing that I was actually injured, Daniel looked at me with fake guilt written all over his face.
“I’m so sorry, Zelda. This is all my fault. I never should have taken you mushroom hunting.”
“Does it still hurt? I’m not leaving your side again. I’ll stay here with you.”
But I didn’t want to see him anymore, and I was disgusted by his touch.
Daniel wouldn’t let go though. He held me tighter, acting like he actually felt bad and was sorry.
I couldn’t push him off, so I said: “You’re hurt too. Just let me go!”
“No, my injury is nothing. I only care about yours.”
He was being so persistent that I finally gave in. Thinking I’d forgiven him, Daniel relaxed and started peeling an apple for me.
While feeding me apple slices, he started talking to his buddies in Italian.
“Good thing I was smart enough to fake this leg injury to make myself look pitiful. Otherwise I never would’ve found a good excuse for my little
affair.”
“Tsk, you’re so clever.”
“Exactly. Look at my Zelda-she’s already over what happened yesterday.”

“Damn lapdog, forgiving you so fast.”
“That’s because my Zelda loves me!”
My body went rigid, and I could barely breathe.
Why was he constantly lying to me? I’d actually started to believe he’d hurt his leg looking for me. I was almost ready to forgive him.
What a joke. I was wrong. This man could never be trusted.
And now he was talking about yesterday’s outdoor sex right in front of me.
They were shamelessly bragging about their sexual exploits, taking turns looking back at me with contempt.
After I was discharged, it was our engagement day.
Daniel was wearing a custom-made suit, with the incredibly sexy Sophia right behind him.
Sophia grabbed Daniel’s hand, looking agitated.
“Danny, are you really going to marry that idiot? What about me? What am I to you?”
“A fuck buddy.”
“But I love you too!”
“But I love Zelda more. After we get married, I’ll never see you again. I want to turn over a new leaf and be a good husband.”
I watched the security footage while packing my things and talking to my boss on the phone.
“The plane takes off in about two hours. I should head out soon. See you in Paris.”
I hung up, grabbed my suitcase, and left without looking back.
But first, I decided to give Daniel a little parting gift.
Daniel was getting anxious when he couldn’t find me anywhere.
He pulled out his phone to call me, but my best friend Emma Mitchell walked over with a wine glass, interrupting him with a laugh.
“Haha, congratulations!”
“My girl Zelda takes relationships very seriously, so don’t worry-she’ll definitely be here on time.”
“And I’m warning you-you better treat our Zelda right, got it?”
“She hates being betrayed more than anything.”
Daniel nodded with a forced smile.
Just as he was about to say something, Emma smacked her forehead.
“Oh, I almost forgot to tell you-we’re all from the same hometown! Zelda too. Before we moved to New York, she was from the same place as you. Our little town was right next to yours.”
“Look, here are some old photos of Zelda from when she was little-she asked me to bring them to you. I’m not lying. I can prove it by speaking
