Chapter 7

Chapter 7

Nathan stumbled backward, completely lost.

If he knew where to find me, he wouldn’t be here.

“Hey, don’t be so upset. She loves you so much. Always listens to you. If you just ask her, I’m sure she’ll-”

“Wait-I wasn’t done talking!”

But Nathan was already gone.

He didn’t care what the captain had to say. He just needed to find me.

He searched everywhere. All my usual spots.

Nothing.

Night fell. The darkness felt like it was swallowing him whole.

He stood in the middle of a crowded street, completely alone, with no idea where to go next.

For the first time, he understood fear.

He’d always gotten off on the thrill of cheating.

The rush of almost getting caught but not quite.

Back then, he thought he could let me go. That he’d be fine without me.

But now that I was gone-he finally understood what regret felt like.

His phone buzzed in his pocket.

He didn’t even check the caller ID. Just answered immediately.

“Babe! Where are you?!”

“Nathan, it’s Leila.”

The second he heard her voice, disgust washed over him.

“Oh. So I guess that bitch’s not home, huh?”

“Want me to come over? We could switch things up this time-”

“Shut the fuck up. We’re done. It’s over.”

“And don’t ever call her that again. She knows everything. About us.”

“She didn’t beat your ass because she was giving ME a chance.”

“A chance to stop, to fix things. But I didn’t. I just kept screwing up.”

Chapter 7

Leila went quiet for a moment.

As a woman, she understood exactly why I hadn’t come after her.

Because I didn’t want Nathan anymore. He was already dirty.

“Okay, fine.”

“She knows, so what? Now we can finally be together for real.”

“Impossible. You’re not wife material. You were just a fuck. That’s it.”

Leila froze.

She’d spent two years with him. And she didn’t mean a damn thing.

Before she could say anything else, Nathan blocked her number and hung up.

Immediately, another call came through.

His mother.

“Nathan! Oh my God-”

“Your sister got fired! And some lawyer just showed up with a deed and kicked us out of the penthouse!”

“That bitch gave me this place! How dare she take it back!”

“When I see her, I’m gonna beat her to death. She humiliated me in front of everyone. I’ll make her pay!”

Nathan hung up. He couldn’t deal with this right now.

He hadn’t even found me yet, and everything was already falling apart.

He didn’t think I’d actually take the penthouse back.

But now he knew-I was done playing nice.

He didn’t remember walking home.

But when he stepped into the bedroom and saw the divorce papers on the bed, reality hit him like a truck.

“Divorce. She really wants to divorce me!”

“But I don’t want that. I don’t-”

“Please just come back. You can hit me, yell at me, whatever. Just come back-”

The doorbell rang.

Nathan’s head snapped up. His heart leapt.

“Xenia! Xenia!”
