Chapter 8
When the door opened, it wasn’t who he was hoping for.
It was a top-tier divorce attorney.
I’d hired him to handle everything.
“Mr. Hartley. I’m Ms. Xenia Winters’ legal representative.”
“I assume you’ve seen the divorce papers. So let’s cut to the chase.”
“Are you agreeing to the divorce or not?”
Nathan snatched the papers and tore them to shreds.
“I don’t agree. I’m not divorcing her.”
“Where’s Xenia? Tell her to come out here and talk to me face-to-face.”
The lawyer smirked.
“Then I’ll see you in court.”
He turned to leave. Nathan grabbed his arm.
“Wait-you’re her lawyer, right? So you know where she is?”
“I do.”
Nathan’s face lit up. “Then tell me. Please. Where is she-”
“Ha. Ms. Winters is royalty. Way above your pay grade.”
“What I can tell you is this: the evidence of your affair is airtight.”
“Once it hits the courtroom, the whole world will know exactly what kind of man you are.”
“So think carefully. Agree to the divorce-or don’t.”
Nathan’s eyes went wide.
Then Eleanor’s voice cut through from behind him.
“Wait-what did you just say? Xenia is rich?”
The lawyer looked at the family with open contempt.
“Turns out, Ms. Winters only worked as a traffic cop to test you.”
“And what happened? One of you humiliated her at every turn. The other one cheated on her.”
“Such a shame. You were this close to marrying into real money.”
Chapter 8
He knew exactly how to twist the knife.
At first, Eleanor didn’t believe him. Thought he was bluffing.
Until the lawyer took out a video.
Me in my real home. The penthouse on the Upper East Side–
Marble floors, crystal chandeliers, understated luxury everywhere.
Eleanor’s jaw dropped.
“Oh my God. My daughter-in-law is RICH? Why didn’t she say something sooner?!”
“I would’ve treated her so much better!”
The lawyer’s smile turned ice cold.
“Too bad you’ll never get the chance. I’m here on behalf of my client to finalize her divorce.”
That shut her up real quick.
Three days later, with the best lawyer money could buy, I got my divorce.
Nathan stood outside the courthouse, chasing after the lawyer.
ust tell me where she is. I just need to see her one more time.”
wyer didn’t even look back.
He slid into his sports car and drove off without a word.
Eleanor slapped herself in frustration, cursing her own greed.
