Tristan looked down at Lawrence. He couldn't help but think that if Nova hadn't used such despicable, underhanded tricks to force the marriage, he would have willingly called this man "Dad," even if their union was nothing more than a loveless business arrangement.
But that wasn't the reality.
He just stared at Lawrence in absolute silence.
That was until Lawrence pushed his caregiver away, lowering himself from his wheelchair, practically collapsing to his knees before Tristan.
Tristan's expression shifted drastically. He gave a sharp nod, signaling his secretary to intervene and stop the older man.
"If you're doing this to beg for my help with your son's case, there's no need. I gave you my word that my legal team would fight this to the very end. We only have half a year left until the verdict, don't we? Once I make a promise, I never break it."
In six months, Ian was virtually guaranteed an acquittal.
Lawrence knew this perfectly well. He knew exactly how ruthless and undefeated Tristan's legal team was.
And he knew Tristan's reputation for keeping his word in the corporate world.
Yet, he still commanded Ian to drop the appeal.
Lawrence shoved the secretary's hands away, forcing his paralyzed lower half to remain kneeling on the cold floor. "There's no need for that anymore. I came here today to beg you for one thing, Mr. Forrester. It's about Nova."
Tristan's hand, which had instinctively reached out to help the man up, froze in mid-air.
His first cynical thought was that this was going to be another extortionate demand.
But instead, Lawrence looked up with broken eyes and said, "I don't know what happened to make you misunderstand my daughter to this extreme degree. But I raised Nova. She is a good person. Drugging you, scheming to crawl into your bed... even if she loved you to the point of absolute madness, she would never, ever do something so vile."
"Right now, as her father, I am only begging you for one thing. Please, let Nova go. Divorce her. We don't want a single penny from you. As for the child in her womb... if by some miracle it survives, you can take it if you want it. If you don't, the Clarke family will raise it. I will sell my own blood and organs if I have to, but I will never let my daughter or her child suffer."
"But..."
When his empire crumbled and he was thrown into a prison cell, Lawrence hadn't shed a single tear.
But right now, his face was soaked with them. "But I still hope, if the baby lives, you'll find it in your heart to give it back to Nova."
"Just for the sake of the brief time you spent as husband and wife, please, let her go. If she committed any crime at all, it was simply having her first innocent crush on you. Tristan, falling in love with the wrong person isn't a mortal sin, is it?"
Standing nearby, Justin subtly glanced at his boss.
For a fraction of a second, he swore he saw a crack in Tristan's impenetrable armor, a fleeting flash of profound emotion.
