"Today is Ms. Sellers's birthday," the secretary explained. "She's incredibly popular right now as a brilliant new genius in the tech world. Several prominent figures ambushed her at the Regent's Spire, trying to recruit her into their companies. The opposing parties are very influential, so Mr. Forrester has to head over and handle it personally."
The secretary pointed to the document on the desk. "Once you've signed the marriage agreement, just leave it there."
Then, the secretary promptly left.
Nova stared at the marriage agreement.
After a two-second pause, she picked it up, along with the thirty-million-dollar diamond ring, and tossed them both straight into the trash can.
Then, she walked out without looking back.

"Did you get the divorce papers?"
Samuel's call came through with perfect timing, just shortly after she got into a cab.
Nova remained silent.
Samuel immediately understood.
"It's the same old story. It's easy for a woman to get married, but hell to get divorced. Getting out usually means being skinned alive and paying a ransom. Tristan has deep pockets, so money doesn't move him. I'll print out another copy of the divorce agreement for you. We'll find another opening."
Nova gave a slight nod. "Samuel, I want to go see my dad first. I need to take the rest of the day off."
Samuel agreed without hesitation.
"By the way," he added, "I've compiled all your work into research papers and published them. They've caused a massive uproar in the tech community. They'll be featured in international academic journals right before the tech gala next week. Oh, and about that gala—you and Chloe Zimmerman are coming with me. Rumor has it a returning professor has some new algorithm data and is looking for a development partner. We're going to secure that project together."
Nova couldn't refuse. "Sure, you make the call."
After hanging up, Nova arrived at Lawrence's apartment, only to find it empty.
When she had called him earlier, he had claimed he was resting in bed.
But as soon as she walked in, she noticed the water in the kettle was ice cold.
