Upstairs, Nova was already trembling with hunger, nausea churning in her empty stomach.
She had gone hungry before, but the physical reaction had never been this severe. Perhaps the miscarriage had taken a heavier toll on her body than she realized.
Her phone had been confiscated by Martha on Tristan's orders.
Even if she wanted to contact the outside world, she had no way to do it.
*Knock, knock, knock!*
The door clicked open, and the rich, savory aroma of food wafted into the room.
Nova didn't even look to see who it was.
She pushed herself up, reaching out for the chopsticks, but the tray was suddenly yanked away. Her hand grasped at empty air.
Looking up, she saw Yasmin.
Yasmin was holding her phone, recording Nova. As she filmed, she mocked, "Martha said you're pretty good at taking recordings, so I thought I'd make one too!"
"My brother said you only get to eat if you admit you're wrong. Come on, get on your knees and beg. Apologize sincerely. Say you'll stop throwing tantrums, stop being a drama queen, and start acting like you know your place. Do that, and I'll give you the food."
With a cruel smile, Yasmin hit play on a voice recording.
It was Tristan's voice from downstairs: *'Then let her starve for a couple of meals. She won't eat until her little tantrum is over and she admits she was wrong... If she doesn't care enough to look after her own health or the baby in her womb, that's her problem.'*
Nova had always known Tristan didn't care about her, nor did he care about the baby.
She had heard words like this so many times that her heart had gone completely numb to them.
Yasmin stared down at her lying in bed with pure disgust. "Stop acting so high and mighty just because you're pregnant! Do you really think my brother wants you to have this kid? Do you think Abdul actually cares about what's in your stomach? And you even had the nerve to hit him!"
Nova stared at Yasmin, a sudden, chilling sense of dread washing over her. "What do you mean?"
Yasmin laughed out loud. "It's because Yvette has a history of genetic diseases in her family. If the child she and my brother eventually have inherits those issues, they'll need a biological match! As long as your kid carries my brother's genes, they can extract its bone marrow to be a donor for Yvette's baby! Hell, maybe even blood or organ donations? The possibilities are endless!"
"You're only living here because Yvette gave the green light! So stop thinking you're anything special!"
Nova was entirely paralyzed with shock.
She never imagined...
Plus, if the truth got out, it might tarnish Yvette's pristine reputation.
He had meticulously considered every single angle to protect Yvette.
But...
Thank God...
Thank God her twins had refused to be born into the Forrester family...
They had left her early, sparing themselves this nightmare.
Nova watched in silence as Yasmin shoved the tray of food in front of her face.
"You like making people kneel, don't you? Get on your knees and beg. If your apology satisfies me and you swear you're done throwing these pathetic tantrums, I'll let you eat."
Nova didn't move an inch.
Yasmin's patience snapped. "Hurry up! Don't make me say it twice! In this house, you're lower than a maid! You're nothing but an incubator!"
