Because she had already resigned.
And yet, just this morning, Yasmin had tried to force her to her knees and humiliated her.
"I can drop the charges, but I have a condition. I want..."
She paused for a fraction of a second. "A divorce."
Tristan's expression darkened several degrees. He seemed to be calculating whether she was playing hard to get or if she was actually serious.
But his mind naturally defaulted to the former.
Because in his eyes, Nova had always been a deeply manipulative, scheming woman.
"What makes you think you have the capital to negotiate with me?"
Nova knew perfectly well she had none. Keeping her head down, she finally spoke up after a long silence. "Does Yasmin count as capital?"
Tristan stared at her and let out a cold, mocking scoff.
Nova knew exactly what that meant. He was just cementing his belief that she was a calculating opportunist.
Once, being misunderstood by him like this would have shattered her heart. But now, she was just desperate to break free.
"What do you think?"
His icy tone left absolutely zero room for negotiation.
Moments later, a contract was tossed onto the table in front of her.
As Nova read the contents, the color drained from her face.
—Tristan was promoting her to Executive Assistant.
Yasmin was gone, so he was forcing Nova to take her place.
Nova stared at him in sheer disbelief.
She had witnessed his ruthless, iron-fisted tactics in the boardroom before.
Now, simply to avoid being leveraged, he was tossing his own sister aside without a second thought.
The cold-blooded cruelty she had seen before was merely the tip of the iceberg.
"I..." Nova started, about to refuse.
But Tristan, domineering and absolute as always, cut her off with a warning. "Your resignation is still processing. Until I personally sign off on it, you aren't going anywhere. Starting today, you are taking over the Executive Assistant's duties. I, Tristan Forrester, do not pay people to sit around and do nothing."
Watching him walk away, Nova immediately called Samuel Wyndham.
When Samuel heard she had signed an ironclad contract with her own name on it, he warned her it was legally binding.
He had noticed Nova's talent a long time ago; he highly valued and admired her capabilities.
If it hadn't been for what happened that one night, she would have rightfully stood by his side as his hand-picked, most trusted executive.
But right now, Tristan simply picked up the transfer order and tossed it into the trash.
A knock at the door broke the silence.
Nova walked in, suppressing the lingering fear in her chest. She handed him the banquet schedule Yasmin had originally drafted. Once he signed off on it, it could be executed.
But the moment she placed it on his desk, the man didn't even spare it a glance. "Redo it."
The family banquet was only three days away. Starting from scratch now was virtually impossible.
Besides, this was Yasmin's draft, and Nova had heard this version was already verbally approved. She was just bringing it in for the official signature.
She took a breath. "If you're... refusing to let me resign just to maliciously target me... I think that's beneath you, Mr. Forrester."
She mustered every ounce of her courage, her fingernails digging painfully into her palms.
Once, she had admired him, looked up to him, and loved him deeply. But now?
The man behind the desk finally raised his eyes to meet hers, his voice devoid of warmth:
