"Your biggest flaw is that you think far too highly of yourself."
The subtext was clear: *Targeting you? You aren't worth the effort, Nova.*
Even though her heart was already battered and bleeding, hearing those words still caused an uncontrollable flare of pain.
Tristan watched as she lowered her head, biting her pale lip. His voice didn't soften in the slightest. "If you can't produce a satisfactory proposal by the end of the day, you will stay late and redo it until I am satisfied."
Biting back her frustration, Nova took the file and walked out.
Over the next few hours, she revised it five consecutive times. With every single version, she poured in her absolute best effort, only for Tristan to reject it outright.
When the sixth version was thrown back at her, Nova finally reached her breaking point. Pushing past her fear of him, she demanded, "Mr. Forrester, what exactly is the issue? What part of this isn't up to your standards?"
Tristan sat behind his massive desk, framed by the dazzling Jeverburg skyline through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
He was the absolute center of power here, his sharp features half-hidden in the shadows. "Ask yourself what personal bias you're hiding in there."
Bias? Nova genuinely didn't understand.
She couldn't figure out why every single draft was being shot down.
...
By evening, the rest of the office had gone out for dinner. Nova remained at her desk, exhausted, her lower back screaming in pain.
Suddenly, a manicured hand landed on a specific line in her seventh draft. "If you raise the banquet budget allocated for me from eight hundred thousand to eight million, he'll probably approve it."
Nova looked up to see Yvette tucking a strand of wavy hair behind her ear. Every movement she made oozed self-satisfaction as she looked down at Nova.
"Tristan probably feels you haven't arranged things adequately for me, which is why he keeps rejecting it. He's always been incredibly generous with me. He likely thinks an eight-hundred-thousand budget is an insult to me."
Nova pressed her lips together in silence.
It was as if she were throwing a petty tantrum, trying to test exactly where Yvette stood in his heart.
And Tristan used his actions to give her a definitive answer of just how highly he valued Yvette.
Approved.
Nova finally realized why her previous six flawless drafts had been rejected.
It was because his heart ached for Yvette. He felt she wasn't being given enough.
Nova's heart turned into an absolute wasteland.
When she walked out, Yvette approached her again, glancing at the fresh signature on the document.
"Looks like it passed. In that case, I need you to tell the police you're settling out of court so Yasmin can come home. The banquet is in a few days, and it wouldn't look good for a Forrester to be missing. If Abdul finds out she's sitting in a cell because of you, he'll blame you for ruining the event."
