"If you try to ruin Yvette's chance to become Professor Mathew's student like you did last time, Tristan will not let you off easy. And neither will I!"
Kieran Pearce stood right behind Nova, delivering his final threat: "Even if you're pregnant right now, Tristan won't say a damn thing if I decide to teach you a lesson."
When Nova looked up again, Tristan had already turned his gaze elsewhere.
She felt a wave of calm wash over her, finally understanding.
Tristan hadn't been looking at her because he cared; he had been scanning the room to see if Kieran had made it over to her.
He was just protecting Yvette, terrified that Nova might try to pull a stunt and embarrass her.
The more clearly Nova saw what it looked like when Tristan actually loved someone, the more painfully awake she became to the reality that she meant absolutely nothing to him.
But... Yvette was going to become the professor's student today?
Nova looked over, her face a mask of total indifference.
Disgust coated Kieran's voice. "Yvette is outstanding, brilliant. She holds a PhD from a top foreign university. She's a tech prodigy that countless countries are fighting to recruit. A genius among geniuses. Give her time, and she'll be a pillar of this nation, her name written in the history books."
He sneered at Nova. "And what are you? A pathetic little assistant at the Forrester Group. If you left this company, who would even hire you? What right do you have to compare yourself to her? Right now, your biggest bargaining chip is that lump of flesh in your stomach! Let me give you a piece of advice: know your damn place!"
Nova turned to look at Kieran, her expression entirely unbothered. "Let me give you a piece of advice too. A desperate lapdog will always end up with nothing. If Yvette is truly as brilliant as you claim, she would have realized ages ago how desperately you fawn over her. It's a pity your precious goddess would rather play the mistress than spare a single glance at a pathetic lapdog like you. Now you're just throwing an impotent temper tantrum and trying to take it out on me."
From start to finish, Nova's voice never wavered. Her completely deadpan delivery shattered Kieran's fragile ego.
"I swear, if we weren't here, I'd—" If this weren't a high-profile banquet, Kieran would have slapped Nova across the face right then and there!
Sure, she was technically Tristan's legally wedded wife, but so what?
Her smile was picture-perfect, as if there was absolutely no bad blood between them.
Trapped, Nova had no choice but to walk over.
"Where do you think you're going?!" Kieran demanded. Seeing she was heading for the head table, he immediately followed.
The ballroom was massive, lined with lavish buffet stations on both sides while distinguished guests mingled endlessly in the center.
As Nova reached the head table, she caught a glimpse of her professor and Samuel out of the corner of her eye.
Abdul was currently boasting to Professor Mathew about how incredibly exceptional Yvette was, listing off her credentials:
"Tech research, finance, professional racing—she's dabbled in it all, even won awards. You could truly call her an all-around genius. On the tech front, she's an overseas PhD. Countless research institutes offered fortunes to keep her, but she insisted on returning to give back to her country. As her family, how could we not support her?"
