Nova wiped her tears and solemnly gave her father her promise.
But then she hesitated. "Dad, the lawsuits for you and Ian... we're still relying on the lawyers Tristan provided..."
In his entire life, Lawrence had only cried once—when his wife passed away. Today, he wept uncontrollably for his daughter.
After a long while, he steadied his emotions and pulled out a men's cufflink. It featured a custom gemstone, clearly worth a small fortune.
"Years ago, when you and your brother took the family yacht out for a research trip, you ran into a dangerous storm. You risked your own life to save a man from the ocean, and he gave you this. I looked into it over the years. This cufflink is incredibly valuable; it likely belongs to someone immensely powerful. Take it. Find him. Maybe, for the sake of you saving his life, he'll help you."
Nova stared at the cufflink, her mind flashing back to three years ago, the very day she decided to step down from CN Dynamics to go to Tristan.
Late that night, out on the dark waters, she had nearly died pulling a drowning man from the sea.
Before handing him off to a medical vessel, the man had pressed this cufflink into her palm, promising to repay the debt.
She hadn't asked for a reward, so she never sought him out.
Plus, it had been pitch black. To this day, she had no idea what he looked like or what his name was.
Sensing her hesitation, Lawrence added:
"If you can't find him, sell it. Use the money to protect yourself, and don't worry about me and your brother. We men failed to protect our family's legacy; it shouldn't fall on a young girl to carry the burden. But... Dad has one last favor to ask of you."
How could Nova ever accept the word "favor" from him?
If she hadn't stubbornly insisted on chasing after Tristan, the Sellers family would never have targeted the Clarkes in the first place.
"Dad, just say the word. I'll get it done!"
Looking as though he were delivering his final wishes, Lawrence pulled out a bank card.
"This is a private account I opened. There's five million in it. Back then, to cover the deficit in the charity funds for the impoverished regions, I sold your mother's heirloom jade signet ring. I asked around. In five days, Ryanne Corporation is hosting an auction. The imperial green signet ring will be there."
Nova took the card.
She wanted to be Ms. Clarke. She wanted to be herself!
After getting Lawrence settled, Nova wanted to visit her brother.
Unfortunately, Ian was in custody and couldn't be seen easily. She could only book an appointment, with no guarantee of actually getting in.
Nova sat in the car in silence. A friend request popped up on her work account.
She glanced at the screen: Chuck Clayton.
She didn't even need to ask what his intentions were. She knew exactly why he was reaching out.
Honestly, she was somewhat impressed by Yvette's ability to command so many powerful men to act as her attack dogs.
"Samuel, I need a new work number." Nova ignored the friend request and looked over at him.
Knowing exactly why she was asking, Samuel simply nodded. "Don't worry. This new number will be monitored and protected by government servers. No one will be able to trace it back to you."
