As Nova took her seat, the butler smiled at Belinda. "You were so worried they were arguing last night, but when the maids went up to tidy the room, they saw that Mr. and Mrs. Forrester had slept in the exact same bed."
Nova's breath hitched.
Belinda chuckled warmly. "I told you, young couples always fight at the foot of the bed and make up at the head of it. Isn't that right, Tristan?"
Tristan didn't say a word.
Instead, he peeled a shrimp and placed it in Nova's bowl.
She understood exactly what he was doing.
Belinda's health was failing, and she couldn't handle the stress. Nova needed to play the part of the deeply beloved wife in front of her.
But she couldn't eat shrimp, so she left it untouched.
Lowering her eyes, Nova ladled a bowl of soup and offered it to him.
Yet as she held it out, he made no move to take it.
Nova was acutely aware that Felipa, Yasmin, and everyone else in the estate who despised her were watching like it was a spectator sport. They were laughing at her for being delusional, for lacking self-respect, and for practically begging for scraps...
Unable to bear it any longer, she was just about to pull her hand back when Tristan finally took the bowl.
As she sat back down, her eyes still stung with unshed tears.
If they were supposed to be acting like a loving couple, he could have just taken it immediately. Why go out of his way to humiliate her?
At the end of the day, her dignity meant absolutely nothing to him. She meant absolutely nothing to him.
If it were Yvette, he would never bear to let her look awkward or embarrassed.
Sitting at the head of the table, Belinda didn't notice the subtle exchange. She just smiled and urged Nova to eat more.
She then instructed Tristan, "Take Nova to her prenatal checkup today."
"Alright," he replied.
Nova wasn't surprised; he had to agree in front of Belinda.
He would probably just hand her off to an assistant later.
But his gaze was icy and unforgiving. Without another word, Nova stepped out of the car.
He didn't check on her, didn't offer to send someone to pick her up. He simply hit the gas and sped off into the distance.
He was going to Yvette.
Feeling completely numb, Nova pulled out her phone. Just as she was about to order a ride, a figure darted out from behind her, slamming into her shoulder.
Her phone was snatched right out of her hand.
The rain hit suddenly and violently, plunging the sky into a darkness that felt like midnight.
Inside his car, the downpour was so heavy that even the wipers couldn't keep up with the deluge.
Tristan glanced briefly at the empty passenger seat.
She was a grown adult. It was impossible that she didn't know how to take cover from the rain or look after herself.
And if she didn't, she was faking it just to farm sympathy and attention.
