Her melodious voice rang out, firm and dripping with entitlement. "8.5 million."
Without a second of hesitation, Nova raised her paddle. "9 million."
The instant she spoke, every head in the room swiveled toward her.
They were dying to know who had the absolute audacity to fight the future matriarch of Forrester Group over a jade ring.
In the distance, Kieran shot Chuck a look and scoffed, "She's just begging to be humiliated! Yvette's father loves that ring, and she wants to buy it as his birthday present. Tristan will never let anyone else take it."
Chuck remained silent.
Throughout the entire ordeal, Tristan acted as though Nova were a complete stranger. He didn't acknowledge her, let alone spare her a single glance.
Chuck genuinely couldn't fathom how a woman could stoop so low. Did she have zero sense of shame?
The next moment, Yvette raised her paddle and skyrocketed the price. "30 million!"
More than triple the current bid!
Nova lowered her eyes, her grip tightening on her paddle as she raised it again. "35 million."
She couldn't afford to make massive jumps. She didn't have Yvette's luxury of a billionaire safety net sitting right beside her.
But that didn't matter. Every cent she was spending was her own.
Today, she was going to bring her mother's heirloom home!
Sensing Nova's relentless determination, Yvette turned around to look at her.
Nova met her gaze with dead, emotionless eyes.
Turning back around, Yvette felt her phone buzz with a text from Kieran: *She's just jealous that Tristan bought you that wedding dress and promised to marry you. She's doing this purely to piss you off! Keep bidding, the Pearce family will back you up if you need it!*
Yvette entirely agreed with his assessment of Nova's motives.
Even so, she turned her head and looked up at Tristan.
Nova wasn't panicking yet, but a knot of anxiety tightened in her stomach. She had no idea if Yvette would actually back down.
Seizing the brief pause, she pulled out the new phone Samuel had given her, typed in the number she knew by heart, and hit dial.
Every single person in the room was burning with envy for Yvette!
Even Nova, after the tidal wave of every other emotion receded, was left with nothing but envy!
In the end, she watched Yvette walk away with her mother's heirloom. Her eyes were left with nothing but an endless, hollow void.
That was, until a message popped up on her phone.
—"Nova, it's the professor. Secure the research data at all costs."
Heirlooms were just objects. The research data was the key to her brother's freedom and her own future.
Nova pulled herself together and locked her eyes on the stage.
The final, highly anticipated item was brought out.
Just as Nova was trying to figure out exactly what 'at all costs' meant, she saw Tristan raise his hand.
An unlimited blank check bid!
