Chapter 146
Iris’s POV
When Shane and Jasmine came back, I wasn’t packing again.
I lay across the scattered clothes on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. My face was sticky from dried tears. I wasn’t even pretending to pack anymore.
Jasmine’s sharp sigh told me how bad I looked.
“Iris,” she whispered, coming closer. “Have you eaten?”
I shook my head without looking at her. “I’m not hungry.”
Shane stepped forward with his arms crossed. “You should eat something.”
“I’m fine,” I said, my voice was hoarse. I pushed myself up slowly, embarrassed by how weak I sounded.
“Sorry. I-” My throat burned. “I didn’t finish packing.”
Jasmine reached out to brush hair from my cheek. “Don’t apologize. You’ve had enough for one day.”
“I’ll just go with whatever’s in the bag,” I said, forcing a laugh. “It’s not like I came to this pack with much anyway.”
My eyes flicked to clothes that Rowan had insisted Jasmine take me shopping for.
“Most of these clothes aren’t even mine.”
Shane frowned.
“Rowan made Jasmine drag me out shopping when I first came here,” I explained, rubbing my eyes. “He said I needed proper clothes. I didn’t come to this pack with much of anything.’
For a moment, I wanted to feel guilty for taking them with me, but a bitter snort escaped before I could stop it.
I deserved to take them all. At least, let them serve as child support.
Jasmine and Shane exchanged a glance. The look on their faces told me something else was wrong. My stomach dropped.
Shane cleared his throat in a way that made me sit up straighter. His face had a grave expression. “We need to talk.”
The tension in his voice made me tense. I gripped the edge of the bed. “What happened?”
He glanced at Jasmine before answering. “Rowan’s just ordered a full lockdown. No one leaves the territory without his direct approval.”
For a second I thought I had misheard him. “What?”
“He has tightened border security,” Jasmine said quietly. “All the hidden routes are blocked. He even doubled the night patrols.’
I stared at them. “You mean that—”
“You can’t leave,” Shane finished.
My mouth went dry. “No.” I shook my head hard. “No, no, no. He can’t-he doesn’t get to decide that.”
Shane spread his hands helplessly. “He already has.”
