Too Late for Regret:My Ex-Husband Are Trying to Win Me Back novel Chapter 18

Ethan's last shred of hope finally collapsed. Zachary asked the same question about Lynette every single day. "Mr. Wright, it seems someone is deliberately concealing Mrs. Wright's whereabouts. And we have no authority in Kingsbridge. It has made things difficult."

Zachary's expression darkened instantly. "I didn't hire you to explain the problem; I hired you to solve it."

Cold sweat broke across Ethan's forehead. Thinking fast, he blurted, "Mr. Wright, since you're heading to Kingsbridge for that case, maybe you could meet with someone from Langford Group. They're the most influential corporation locally. If their CEO helps us, we may finally have a lead."

Zachary fell silent for a long moment before saying, "Let's do that. Book me a flight for tonight."

Ethan sighed in relief at Zachary's response and hurried out.

Alone in the office, Zachary stared at Lynette's photograph on his desk. The edges of the frame had faded where his fingers had worn it smooth—clear evidence of how often he had touched it over the past six months, missing her.

"Nettie, it's been six months. Will you ever forgive me?"

A single tear slipped down his face. He pulled out her medical records from the past three years. The report clearly indicated that Lynette suffered from severe depression with risks of self-harm.

When he first saw it, despair had nearly crushed him. He was terrified she might not survive the pain after leaving the country, choosing to end her life.

That was why he had to find her. At the very least, he needed to know she was still alive.

But for six months, she had vanished into thin air. No matter how hard he searched, he found nothing.

For the first time in his life, Zachary felt fear.

If given another chance, he would cherish her. He would never doubt her again, never let mistrust poison them.

However, the world offered no redo. Some things, once done, could never be undone.

"Mr. Wright, why aren't you answering? Is there something you can't say?"

"Mr. Wright, please answer the question."

Under the glaring cameras, Zachary finally broke the silence. He said slowly and deliberately, "I defended a wrongful case three years ago, so I've been waiting to see that person again, hoping I can say one thing to her—that I'm sorry. If she's watching, she can find me anytime. I will take full responsibility and give her a proper answer to what happened back then."

With that, he turned and walked into Langford Group, security blocking the press outside.

But Lorelai was already in tears. Nearly four years had passed. Was Zachary finally willing to admit he was wrong?

If so, why hadn't he cleared her father's name?

No—he only wanted to use this as bait to lure her to him. He knew the only thing left that could force her out into the open was William's case.
