Too Late for Regret:My Ex-Husband Are Trying to Win Me Back novel Chapter 9

Charmaine's heart sank, her eyes reddening. "Zachary, are you tired of me? Do you think I'm a burden?"

Zachary felt a wave of irritation. For three years, every time he tried to draw a line, Charmaine would say things like this. To avoid her spiraling, he had always backed down, leaving things unsaid.

But the memory of Lynette's shattered expression that night weighed on him. He didn't want to keep hurting her.

He drew a breath. "Charmaine, I'm not sick of you. Stop twisting my words. I just think you should pursue your own happiness. I won't be eating dinner with you. Given our past, it's not appropriate for us to share a romantic meal like this."

With that, Zachary stood up and left. Behind him, the sound of smashing echoed through the door. In the past, he would have gone back. This time, he didn't even turn his head.

Three years of atonement were enough.

That night, Zachary didn't go home. Afraid of waking Lynette, he stayed at the office.

The next morning, his assistant Ethan Jones entered, startled. "Mr. Wright, you didn't go home last night?"

Zachary rubbed his eyes, exhaustion etched across his face. "Something came up. Since you're here, do something for me—start looking for a new secretary."

He had told Charmaine to resign before, but never followed through.

Ethan was even more stunned. "Mr. Wright, did Ms. Freemont do something wrong?"

For years, Charmaine had shadowed Zachary everywhere. Employees even whispered she was the boss' wife. Of course, they only dared say that behind closed doors, never to Zachary's face.

Zachary's tone was firm. "She does her job well. But given our history, it's not appropriate for her to remain my secretary long-term."

Ethan froze, surprise flickering in his eyes.

Seeing him standing there unmoving, Zachary's expression darkened. "What are you standing there for?"

Ethan snapped back to himself, scratching his head. "I just didn't expect such a drastic change from you, Mr. Wright. Everyone thought you had feelings for Ms. Freemont."

Zachary's face soured, and his tone turned cold. "Instead of working, you gossip about your boss? Looks like you're too free. I guess your workload isn't heavy enough."

Ethan hurried to explain. "We weren't gossiping. It's just that Ms. Freemont often acts in ways that make people misunderstand. Honestly, even Mrs. Wright would think you had feelings for her."

Zachary's chest tightened. So it wasn't just Lynette—everyone thought the same. He had dismissed her doubts as petty, but now he realized the problem was him.

His voice turned hoarse. "So you thought I liked Charmaine?"
