Tristan sat with his arms crossed, looking nothing like his usual laid-back self. He had a stormy look on his face, brooding in silence.

Patsy and Clair noticed Tristan had something to discuss with Brianna.

After wrapping up their conversation, the two found a reason to slip away.

Brianna forced a smile.

“Why are you upset so early in the morning?” Brianna asked.

Tristan walked straight up to her, unable to hold back any longer.

His eyes were full of concern.

“Did she come looking for you again yesterday?” he asked.

Brianna had already figured that was the reason Tristan came.

She didn’t want her friend to feel uncomfortable.

She said lightly, almost as if it didn’t matter.

“Did she mention it to you?” Brianna asked.

Tristan didn’t respond, his heart aching for her as he watched.

“Did she give you a hard time?” he asked.

Brianna gave him a gentle, comforting smile.

“Kids can be unpredictable. Once we cleared the air, everything was okay,” she said.

Tristan stood rooted to the spot, fighting the urge to pull her into his arms.

“You’re way too kind,” he said softly.

Brianna gave a small, wry smile.

“Only you would say that,” she teased.

Before Tristan could say anything, she went on.

“It’s really not a big deal. Just let it go, and don’t let this mess up your relationship with her,” she said.

Still worried about Tristan’s temper, she added another reminder.

“She’s way younger than you. Be nice to her, okay? Don’t bully her just because she’s a kid,” she said.

Tristan’s brows furrowed, and he grumbled in frustration.

“She’s definitely not my girlfriend,” he muttered, clearly annoyed.

Brianna shot him a puzzled look.

Tristan rushed to explain.

“It’s just my family trying to play matchmaker, but honestly, that’s not what I want at all,” he said.

He couldn’t bring himself to talk about that night, worried Brianna might see him as dirty or look at him differently.

Brianna could hear the rejection in Tristan’s voice, and it all started to make sense.

Brianna realized why Nancy had been coming after her lately.

“Come on, you’re not exactly a kid anymore. She’s a cute girl. Maybe you should try talking to her or something,” Brianna teased.

Tristan gave her a sulky look, almost like he was pouting.

He muttered under his breath, “The three of us grew up together. You really don’t know how I feel?”

Brianna’s heart skipped a beat.

‘Is he serious with all that teasing, or does he really have feelings for Patsy?’ she wondered.

‘If he really likes Patsy, that might not be a bad thing after all,’ she thought.

“You spend all day messing around. Seriously, it’s about time you got your act together,” Brianna teased.

Tristan pouted and teased, “My dad was saying the same thing to me this morning. Why are you nagging me just like he does?”

Brianna couldn’t help but laugh at his teasing.

She thought to herself, ‘One of these days, I should try to figure out what Patsy really thinks about Tristan.

‘If those two ended up together, they’d be a good match,’ she thought to herself.

Tristan noticed Brianna didn’t seem bothered by all the drama with Nancy, and that put his mind at ease.

He finally relaxed.

Thinking back to the way Clair was looking at her earlier-all intense and focused-Tristan couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy.

He asked, sounding a bit jealous, “So, what were you all plotting just now?”

Brianna rolled her eyes. ‘Plotting? Seriously?’ she thought.

“Clair’s company is hosting a charity event, and since he’s not familiar with the area, Patsy and I are just helping him out,” she explained.

“Can you really keep up with all this?” Tristan asked, his tone a little sour.

“Whether I can handle it or not, I still have to help. Clair’s always been there for me, so it’s nice to finally do something for him,” Brianna replied.

Tristan felt a pang of jealousy as he listened.

“Come on, you guys don’t have nearly as many connections as I do. Just tell him to hit me up. You can leave it to me,” he said.

Brianna looked at him and thought, ‘He really is such a child sometimes.’

“Inviting people is just one part. There’s a lot more to take care of. It’d be awesome if you could lend a hand,” she said.

Tristan was speechless. He thought he could play it smart, but ended up shooting himself in the foot. Now he had to help out whether he liked it or not.

Brianna checked the time.

“Come on, let’s go grab some food,” she said.

They asked Patsy to join them, and the three headed out for lunch together.

That afternoon, Brianna spent hours hustling to finish the Tevanni collab draft. She barely looked up from

her screen the whole time.

By the time she finally clocked out, she stretched and let out a long sigh of relief.

She left work early and headed home.

When she arrived, the sun was setting.

The sky was bathed in a warm orange glow.

The yard was bursting with flowers in full bloom.

Brianna couldn’t help but smile.

She grabbed a pair of scissors, ready to head out to the yard and snip some fresh flowers to put in a vase.

The gardener had kept the yard in great shape.

The roses and hydrangeas were bursting with color, almost glowing with freshness.

Just looking at them, Brianna felt her spirits soar.

Just then, a voice drifted over from outside the yard fence.

“Brianna,” the voice called out.

Brianna felt a chill run down her spine.

She looked up and locked eyes with Whitney.

“What are you doing here?” she blurted out, startled.

She couldn’t help but raise her voice.

“We moved in,” Whitney said, a grin spreading across his face.

Whitney’s lips curled into a grin.

‘So the neighbors who moved in a couple of days ago are actually the Meyers family!’ Brianna thought, stunned.

‘Did they move here just to mess with me?’ Brianna wondered, feeling annoyed.

She looked at him with a plaintive, aggrieved expression.

Whitney said, a bit of spite in his voice.

“This house was supposed to be for Darcy, but since you made her leave, we had no choice but to move in ourselves,” he smirked.

Brianna scoffed.

‘Look at him, acting like he’s the one who’s been wronged,’ she thought.

Seeing her stay silent, Whitney went on.

“Well, at least now the whole family can look out for each other,” he said, putting on a friendly face.

Brianna shot back without missing a beat.

“Let’s just stay out of each other’s business, alright? You do your thing, I’ll do mine. Let’s not mess with each other’s lives,” she said, her tone icy.

At this, Whitney fell silent.

After a while, he spoke up again.

“Brianna, let me ask you something. You and Brandon are already living apart, so why not just get a divorce?”. he said.

Brianna put the scissors and flowers aside.

She folded her arms across her chest.

“Let me ask you. After all these years, why do you always choose to kneel and plead instead of just signing the

divorce papers?” she retorted.

Whitney was stunned, totally at a loss for words.

Jane stepped up.

She said sternly, her tone full of reproach.

“Seriously, is that how you talk to your own dad? What, you actually want your parents to split up?” Jane snapped.

Brianna laughed sarcastically.

“Come on, isn’t that exactly what you want, Dad? Me getting divorced as fast as possible?” she shot back.

Whitney let out a resigned sigh, looking completely at a loss.

“What can I do? You’re both my daughters. It’s not like I can just pick sides,” he said, sounding weary.

Hearing Whitney’s phony, melodramatic act, Brianna couldn’t help but feel sick to her stomach.

Whitney kept going, his voice full of fake concern.

“If this hadn’t happened, how could I ever let you get divorced?” he said, putting on a pitiful act.

Brianna shook her head with a sarcastic smile, helpless in the face of their hypocrisy.

“Brianna, you’re different from Darcy. Why can’t you understand your dad?” Whitney said, putting on his best

sincere act.

“Oh? How am I any different?” Brianna retorted, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

“You’ve always had everything the Meyers family could give you, but Darcy’s been through so much hardship. I just want to make it up to her,” Whitney said, sounding as pathetic as ever.
