Chapter 12 Talk of Divorce
Brandon sulked with a thundercloud face all evening, and Brianna chuckled to herself. She thought, ‘What is eating him? Still sore because I gave Darcy a hard time today?”
That night, Josefina urged them to stay Brianna tried to bow out and head home, but Kendra latched on, pleading for both parents to take her to school tomorrow, her very first day.
She had to give in.
Josefina hit the hay early. Once she was tucked in, Brianna dropped the polite facade with the Levy family and went upstairs by herself.
Kendra was still awake, but the nanny and Brandon could deal with that. No need for her to hover over every little thing anymore.
Back in the day, overnight stays at the estate meant she was always the last to crash.
She’d settle Josefina, then bathe and lull Kendra to sleep, followed by tending to Gabrielle. After Kendra and Gabrielle were out, she’d rustle up midnight snacks for Margo and whoever else, and top it off by waiting on Brandon hand and foot.
She’d essentially made herself the Levy family’s live–in help, bending over backward to please everyone.
As she watched Brianna head up the stairs, Margo shot Brandon a smug look, taking in his knitted brows and grumpy vibe. She thought, ‘That’s better. He’s thrown my family into chaos, so why should his get off easy? This weekend? Darcy’s first big performance. Oh, I’ll show up to ‘cheer her on.”
Fresh from her shower, Brianna sprawled on the bed with a book,
Not long after, Brandon swung the door open. They didn’t even make eye contact.
He made a beeline for the bathroom to wash up. When he came out, shirtless and ripped, the room filled with the steamy, clean scent of soap.
From the corner of her eye, Brianna glimpsed his chiseled lines and swallowed hard without thinking.
Right then, Kendra barged in, making a racket and insisting on crashing with her parents.
Since Brianna had moved out, she’d been super attached to Brianna, except whenever Darcy entered the picture.
With divorce looming, Brianna wanted as little involvement with him as possible. The idea of sharing a bed tonight set every nerve on edge.
Kendra’s meltdown? A perfect out.
But Brandon wasn’t on board. “You’re getting too big for this, no more bunking with Mom and Dad. Off to your own room.”
“Nuh–uh! I wanna sleep with Mommy.” Kendra snuggled deeper into Brianna’s embrace.
“Come on, be a good girl. Big girls give Dad some space. Go hop into your princess bed.”
“Then you go sleep in my room.”
Thwarted, Brandon hesitated, then switched tactics. “Go snuggle with Grandma. You won’t see her as often once school kicks in.”
“I don’t wanna sleep with Grandma!”
“Then crash with Margo!”
“No way, no way!”
Brianna thought, ‘Why is he so hell–bent on getting rid of Kendra?‘ Brianna puzzled. ‘Shouldn’t he be the one squirming?’ Brandon kept at it, blending sweet talk with stern warnings, until he finally shuttled her off to Gabrielle’s room.
When he came back, his gaze burned with intensity.
After all these years of marriage, Brianna recognized that fire instantly.
Brandon slid into bed with urgency, ditching his typical suave polish, his hands now fumbling and restless.
Brianna caught his wrist as it crept under her shirt, holding his eyes steadily. “So, where are we on the divorce?”
Brandon went still.
She said, “I mentioned it before Drokvine. I don’t want a thing.” He thought, ‘All this time later, and she is still throwing her tantrum?‘ His expression shadowed. “Divorce? At least give me a real reason.”
”
Chapter 12 Talk of Porce
Over seven years, she’d floated divorce a hundred times or more. This round had stretched past a month. He wondered, ‘Isn‘ 1 she done yet?‘
She said, “You don’t love me…” She wanted to say, ‘And I don’t love you anymore‘
She’d planned to spell out their problems calmly, wrap it up neatly. But the moment the words escaped, a torrent of pent–up hurts rushed in, her voice shook, and the rest caught in her throat.
Something shifted in Brandon’s eyes. After a pause, he replied, “You knew that going into the marriage.”
The fact she knew all too well, coming from his lips, cut like a thousand knives, leaving her breathless with pain, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably. “Yes! But I could endure it before. Now I can’t.”
He thought, ‘Why can’t she?’ Brandon’s eyes darkened further, his words emerging as cold as ice. “Have you thought this through?”
Brianna nodded resolutely. “Yes!”
Brandon said nothing more and turned to leave.
He couldn’t understand what she was so upset about. She’d wanted to move out, and he’d never interfered. She’d wanted to start her own business, and he’d given her his full support. He wondered, ‘What else could she possibly be dissatisfied with?
She knew that divorcing the president of the Levy Group wouldn’t be straightforward. As long as progress was being made, she could wait.
But that simple conversation had nearly drained her soul.
She knew this was the right thing to do, yet her heart still ached terribly.
He had been her entire youth. Letting go felt like carving flesh from her bones.
The next day, as if nothing had happened, the two of them accompanied Kendra to school.
After signing in and getting her class assignment, the teacher led them on a tour of the campus.
The couple’s stunning looks and ethereal aura made them stand out like a sore thumb, even among the other parents at this elite school.
A little kid holding Kendra’s hand sneaked a glance toward the parents, then leaned in to whisper in her ear, “Your mom and dad are prettier than the people on TV.”
Kendra looked back at her parents, beaming with pride.
Once the activities wrapped up, the two took Kendra to Pizza Hut.
Then a jeweler called, reminding her to head to the Evergreen Club at 3:30 to check out goods from some out–of–town suppliers.
The Evergreen Club was Klamdiff’s most exclusive private venue.
In a place like that, if you wanted to snag what you were after, you had to come fully prepared.
After dropping Kendra off at home, she swung by to pick up the platinum bag Brandon had just given her.
She handed Kendra over to the housekeeper, went upstairs to grab the bag, then called Patsy to see if she had time to join her for the jewelry viewing.
Patsy had business meetings that afternoon and couldn’t make it. So she turned to Tristan instead.
Brianna wasn’t great at dealing with strangers, and she was even worse at haggling. In situations like this, she needed someone by her side.
She dialed Tristan, and he agreed without hesitation.
By the time they arrived at the Evergreen Club, several jewelers and a handful of wealthy wives and heiresses were already there.
