After hearing about her father’s passing, Brianna headed straight to her mother’s grave.

Standing before the tombstone, gazing at her mother’s photo, Brianna felt a calm she’d never experienced before.
“Mom, things are finally settling down. You can rest easy now,” Brianna whispered.
Just as she got back to the office, Gabrielle called.
“Hello,” Brianna answered.
“I heard someone stirred up trouble at your father’s wake right after it was set up,” Gabrielle said, her tone calm. “If word gets out, it’ll be humiliating for everyone. The dead deserve respect. Don’t be so headstrong. Go with Brandon and help smooth things over.”
Brianna stayed silent. Deep down, she really didn’t want to go. But he was still her biological father, and letting things get messy would be humiliating for her and the family.
Seeing she didn’t respond, Gabrielle continued, “Brianna, once someone passes, all grudges should be put to rest. Let your father leave with a bit of dignity. Just listen to me and go check things out.”
With Gabrielle putting it that way, Brianna couldn’t really refuse. After thinking it over, she finally agreed.
She dragged her feet all afternoon, not bothering to go downstairs until Brandon’s car finally pulled up.
Brandon looked worried as he asked, “Are you okay?”
“Couldn’t be better,” Brianna replied, sounding offhand.
Seeing she wasn’t particularly sad, Brandon relaxed a bit. “I’m sorry. I should’ve handled this better.”
Brianna turned to him, surprised. ‘Since when did Mr. Levy start apologizing?‘
She gave a faint smile. “It’s nothing. It never really had much to do with us anyway.”
Hearing her say “us,” Brandon felt a little pleased inside.
When they got to the funeral home, Whitney’s wake was much calmer than Brianna had imagined.
Outside, a bunch of young guys in suits were hanging around in small groups, chatting quietly. Inside, some women were wailing and mourning.
Brianna almost thought she’d walked into the wrong place, but when she glanced up at the funeral banners, it was indeed Whitney’s.
‘Guess they actually managed to organize the funeral pretty well,‘ she thought.
Lost in thought, Brianna stepped into the funeral hall and nearly ran right into someone. When she looked

“Tristan?” Brianna exclaimed, genuinely surprised. It had been forever since she’d seen him.
“Wow, you actually came! I figured you’d skip this,” Tristan said, flashing a boyish grin.
“Mr. Pratt, Brandon greeted him.
“Hello, Mr. Levy,” Tristan replied coolly.
Brianna just assumed he was here to pay his respects, so she glanced inside the hall and asked, “Who’s crying over there?”
She glanced over, but none of those women looked familiar to her.
Tristan scratched his head, looking a little embarrassed. “Oh, I saw it was way too quiet here, so I hired some pros to help out.”
Brianna was taken aback. She never would’ve thought the usually carefree Tristan could be so thoughtful. She knew he did all this just to help her save face.
“Thanks, Tristan,” she said.
“Alright, go on in and take a look,” Tristan said, waving her off.
Brandon’s expression was tense as he followed Brianna into the funeral hall.
Brianna had expected the rest of the Meyers family to be present, and she felt worry that if another scene broke out in this setting, it would be even more embarrassing.
Brandon seemed to share her concerns, his guard clearly up.
But as they stepped inside, only Jane was seated at the main family table. None of the other Meyers relatives were there.
Brianna frowned, confused, and asked Tristan. “Is she the only one here? Where’s everyone else?”
“When I got here, she was the only one around. I haven’t seen anyone else,” Tristan replied, giving Jane a sympathetic look.
“That’s odd. Reese isn’t here, and Darcy and Blanca ought to be here too, Brianna thought.
Brandon noticed Brianna’s confusion and said, “Hang on, I’ll go ask.”
He walked over and sat down next to Jane, greeting her, “Jane.”
Jane was so lost in her tears that when she heard Brandon’s voice, she looked up at him, almost like she couldn’t place who he was.
“Jane, where is everyone? Why are you the only one here?” Brandon asked.

“They’re gone. All gone. My poor son… not a single soul left to send him off,” Jane said, her voice thick with grief.
“Where did they go?” Brandon pressed, feeling something was definitely wrong.
“They ran off?” Jane sobbed. “As soon as trouble hit, everyone just bolted!”
Seeing Jane sobbing so miserably, Brianna’s heart went out to her. She walked over, catching Jane saying they’d all run off.
Brianna’s eyes narrowed as she stared at Jane. “They ran off? Where did they go?”
Jane was so dazed that she didn’t even lift her eyes. “They left my poor son all alone.”
Brandon and Brianna exchanged a glance, then Brandon got up and stepped outside to make a call.
Brianna pressed Jane, “So, when exactly did they take off?”
Jane turned to look at Brianna, her gaze slowly clearing.
As soon as she recognized Brianna, Jane’s eyes flashed with fury, like she was about to explode. But she didn’t say a single word of reproach. The anger faded, leaving only a bottomless sadness in her eyes.
“You came,” Jane finally managed, her voice barely audible.
“Yeah,” Brianna nodded. “You mean Blanca and the others just disappeared?”
Jane seemed to be hit by a wave of grief. She shook her head and took Brianna’s hand. “Brianna, when things go south, that’s when you see who’s real and who’s not. We did wrong by you and your mom, and I’m sorry for that. But he’s still your father. Please, just give him a proper send–off.”
Brianna stayed unmoved. ‘An apology now doesn’t really change anything!‘
“Darcy’s caught up in a criminal case. She can’t leave Klamdiff. So what do you mean by ‘they ran off“?” Brianna asked.
“Last night, someone came and stirred up trouble. Your aunt grabbed Darcy and left. No one’s heard from them since. This morning, still nothing. Blanca said your aunt took her daughter and went after them, but now she’s vanished too,” Jane explained.
Brianna let out a cold laugh. ‘When disaster strikes, everyone scatters. What a loving family, huh.”
Just then, Brandon came back in, his brow furrowed.
“Any updates?” Brianna asked.
“I’ve got someone looking into it,” Brandon replied.
Brianna nodded, stood up, and made to leave without hesitation.
Jane quickly reached out and grabbed her hand, desperate to stop her. “Brianna, whatever happened, he’s still
