Late autumn had hit, and the air was dry and chilly. Caroline from the Harper family went out for a stroll, caught a cold, and ended up getting sick.
As soon as Brianna landed in Klamdiff, she headed straight to the hospital.
It had been over two weeks since Brianna last saw Caroline, and Caroline looked noticeably thinner. Brianna’s eyes turned red as she watched Caroline lying in bed, putting on a brave face.
She picked up some fruit and slowly peeled it, trying to cover up how she felt.
“You’ve lost weight,” Caroline said, her voice tinged with a gentle ache as she looked at Brianna’s profile.
Brianna smiled, trying to comfort her, “Yeah, I’ve dropped a few pounds. I just haven’t gotten used to the food in Port City yet.”
Caroline gazed at her, eyes full of tenderness, not saying a word for a while.
Brianna handed over the freshly peeled fruit.
“Port City stays pretty warm in the winter, Caroline. Once you’re feeling better, I’ll take you there to stay for a bit,” Brianna said.
Caroline nodded distractedly.
She slowly bit into the apple, her gaze conflicted, as if she was pondering something deeply.
After a while, Caroline placed the apple on the cup lid by the nightstand, took the tissue Brianna handed her, and wiped her hands absentmindedly, like she was about to make up her mind about something.
“Brianna, it’s good that you have your own career,” Caroline said with a gentle smile.
Brianna nodded, sensing that her grandma had something important to say, so she waited attentively.
“Brandon’s just not a good match for you. Just divorce him,” Caroline said, her voice calm and steady, not a hint of regret. “I’m old now, and I really don’t want to see you repeat your mother’s mistakes.”
Brianna felt her heart clench.
Looking at Caroline’s hollowed cheeks, an unexpected ache tugged at her heart.
Ever since Caroline’s injury at the ski resort last year, she hadn’t mentioned divorce again. Now that she brought it up, Brianna figured it must be because Caroline had seen those photos from the Dorynthia dinner.
“Yeah,” Brianna nodded, her throat tightening, the words she wanted to say stuck inside.
For more than a year now, she hadn’t fulfilled her duty as a granddaughter, always making Caroline worry about her. Waves of guilt and sorrow welled up in her heart.

Seeing that Brianna didn’t say anything, Caroline thought she was hesitating.

“Brandon’s not like your unreliable dad. He’d never shortchange Kendra,” Caroline said, trying to comfort her. “The Levy family is way better off financially. Just let him have Kendra.”
Then, worried Brianna might not be able to let go, she quickly added, “Of course, if you really can’t bear to part with her and want to go for custody, I’ll back you up all the way.”
“A mother and her child are always connected, I get it,” Caroline explained carefully. “Trying to start a business and raise a kid at the same time is tough. I just don’t want you to run yourself ragged.”
Brianna couldn’t hold back anymore. She collapsed onto her grandmother’s lap, her tears slipping down her face.
After leaving the hospital, Brianna drove home, her mind busy calculating all the details about the divorce.
Brandon had acquired Sino Holdings and was in the middle of restructuring, but the shares he bought were all registered under her name.
And then there was the last round of funding for Horizon Group. Brandon had invested a hefty sum, so he also held a stake in the company.
Getting divorced now would make splitting up their assets a complicated mess. The more she thought about it, the deeper her frown grew. ‘Whatever, I should just let a professional lawyer sort this out,’ she told herself.
With all the running back and forth between the office and the hospital, Brianna hadn’t even had a chance to go home and see Kendra, let alone talk to Brandon.
That morning, Brianna arrived at the hospital early, pushing Caroline in a wheelchair for her check-up. After wheeling her into the ultrasound room, she waited quietly outside.
Lost in thought, she looked up and found herself locking eyes with Brandon.
Both of them were a little surprised.
“What are you doing here?” Brandon asked, walking over, concern in his eyes.
Brianna instinctively glanced around, worried that something might be wrong with Kendra.
“I’m here with Caroline for her check-up. What about you?” Brianna asked, her voice tinged with nervousness.
Before Brandon could respond, a graceful silhouette swept in out of nowhere.
“Let’s go, Brandon,” Allison said, holding her test results and giving him a sweet, playful smile.
Following Brandon’s gaze, Allison turned, and only then did she notice Brianna.
She forced an even brighter smile. “Ms. Meyers, you’re here too?”
Brianna smiled back. “I’m here with my grandma for her check-up. Are you here for a check-up, too, Ms.
Moore?”

“Is your grandma sick?” Allison asked, genuine concern in her voice.
“She just caught a chill,” Brianna replied.

Just then, the doctor called from the ultrasound room, asking the family to come in and pick her up.
“Well, I’ll let you get back to it,” Brianna said with a smile, then turned and went inside to get Caroline.
She helped Caroline get dressed, checked with the doctor about her condition, took the report, and wheeled her out.
To her surprise, Brandon was still waiting at the door.
But Allison was nowhere to be seen.
Caroline looked a bit startled, glancing up at Brianna, thinking maybe Brianna had called him over.
“You’re still here?” Brianna asked, equally surprised.
“Grandma, what’s bothering you?” Brandon stepped forward, worry written all over his face.
“It’s nothing, just a little cold,” Caroline said, trying to look energetic despite her obvious fatigue.
“Chilly out there,” Brandon said as he took over the wheelchair, shooting Brianna a look to ask which way to
“The inpatient ward,” Brianna answered.
Brandon pushed the wheelchair, flashing a polite smile. “How about heading somewhere warm for the winter? Grandma said she wants to go south. Maybe you two could go together. It’s always nice to have company.”
Caroline acted as if she were just making small talk with a stranger, keeping things polite but distant.
“Thank you, but these old bones aren’t up for much travel. I’d rather just stay close to my family,” she replied.
Brandon nodded.
He added, “A few days ago, Grandma mentioned your 80th birthday is coming up. We really ought to throw you a big celebration.”
“Josefina remembers? That’s funny,” Caroline chuckled. “I don’t even know the exact day I was born, so what’s there to celebrate?”
Caroline came into the world during a famine. Her mother gave birth to her while escaping, and after months on the road, they finally found her father. But her mother passed away not long after.
‘No one really knows my actual birthday anymore; it’s just guessed to be sometime near the end of winter, she thought.
Caroline hardly ever celebrated her birthday, except for her 60th and 70th, when she picked Christmas, and the family gathered for a lively celebration.

“Let’s just go with Christmas again,” Brandon said, deliberately sounding warm and familiar. “I’ll handle it.”
Caroline exchanged a look with Brianna, then answered with polite distance, “You’re always so busy. Let’s see about it later.”
Back when she was seventy, they still hadn’t tied the knot.
He was just acting all affectionate, only because he felt guilty after being caught red-handed.
Brianna gave a scornful laugh. ‘This guy really never quits, huh? Wants to play around and still keep his wife happy,’ she thought.
After settling Caroline back in her room, Brandon didn’t seem in any hurry to leave.
He peeled some fruit, checked in with the doctor about her condition, and when he returned, he asked who’d be staying with her overnight.
He made sure to ask about every single thing, leaving nothing out.
Brianna kept that sarcastic smile on her lips, finally blurting out, “Are you just hanging around here all day?”
Brandon had long sensed the chilly distance between Brianna and Caroline. Because of that, he found himself trying a little too hard to look caring.
Hearing Brianna’s remark, he said goodbye to Caroline, grabbed his coat, and headed out.
“Go see him out,” Caroline told Brianna.
The two of them walked out of the room together.
“How’s the couture dinner going?” Brandon asked.
