Brianna caught a whiff of danger and didn’t hesitate for a second. She dialed Brandon’s number right away.
She was out in the open, while the schemers hid in the shadows. She couldn’t let her guard down.
“Hello?” Brandon’s voice was cold.
“I just ran into Reese at the hotel,” Brianna said, her voice carrying a trace of grievance, without meaning to.
She hadn’t expected herself to sound like that.
“Which hotel are you at?” Brandon’s voice held a hint of worry.
Brianna told him the name of the hotel and her room number.
“Stay in your room and don’t go anywhere. I’ll have Clifford come pick you up,” Brandon ordered. “I’m booking the earliest flight tomorrow.”
Hearing that, Brianna felt a lot more at ease.
The wait felt endless. Brianna restlessly paced around her room, and after a long while of thinking, she realized waiting helplessly wasn’t an option.
So, she grabbed a few essentials and headed downstairs.
When she reached the hotel lobby, Brianna made her way to the front desk.
“Hi, my aunt, Reese Meyers is staying on the 24th floor. I forgot her room number, and I can’t reach her by phone. Could you look up her room for me so I can check on her?” Brianna asked.
The receptionist gave her a professional smile. “You can’t reach her? I’ll have someone go up and check.”
“That’s okay, just let me know her room number, and I’ll go up myself,” Brianna replied.
“Sorry, ma’am, we can’t disclose guest information. If you’re worried, we can send someone up right away,” the receptionist replied.
Knowing there was no point in insisting, Brianna smiled. “I’ll try calling her again later. If I still can’t reach her, I’ll come back to you.”
“Okay, ma’am,” the receptionist replied.

Just a couple steps later, the name flashed through her mind-Nancy.
‘Why would Nancy be at this hotel?’ Brianna wondered.

Coincidences kept stacking up, like dominoes crashing down, and everything was tumbling out of her control.
Not stopping to think, Brianna spun around and rushed out after her.
Outside, the little garden was putting on a fountain light show, water jets dancing to the music, rising and falling, while the crowd surged like a tide.
Brianna got jostled by the crowd, and when she looked up again, that familiar figure had already disappeared into the neon glow. She stood on her tiptoes, like a hunter zeroing in on her prey.
There she was! Nancy was making her way around the flower beds, heading toward the main road.
The night wind carried a salty tang, making Brianna’s ears ring. She quickened her pace, her heels tapping out an urgent beat on the pavement as she followed close behind.
With only a few seconds left before the light changed, Nancy slipped across the street. Brianna broke into a jog to catch up, just in time to see Nancy veer toward a set of seaside stairs. The narrow steps looked like a jagged tear in the darkness, leading straight beneath the bridge.
There was no soft sand under the bridge, only a stretch of eerie, jagged rocks.
The bridge’s pillars were lost in shadow, lit only by a single, battered streetlamp, its weak glow breaking up the darkness in patchy spots.
Brianna gripped the railing, her heart thumping. ‘Why would Nancy come to a place like this all alone?’ she wondered.
She took a deep breath, ready to go down the steps.
Just as her heel hovered in the air, a cold hand seized her arm from behind.
“Where are you going?” Clifford’s voice was clear, his eyes wide with confusion as he blinked at her, clearly baffled by her actions.
Clifford’s words snapped Brianna out of it. She turned, hearing the waves crash against the rocks, and frowned.
“I saw someone I know go down there,” Brianna said, a sense of dread settling in her chest. “I’m worried she might get into trouble, so I want to check on her.”
Nancy had pulled some pretty extreme stunts before, and Brianna’s anxiety was intensifying by the second.
“Are you sure you recognize her?” Clifford asked, still sounding skeptical.
‘We’re not in Klamdiff. What are the odds I’d run into someone I know here? Maybe I just saw wrong, Brianna

Clifford’s words made Brianna’s confidence waver. ‘Could I have been wrong?’ she wondered.
Unable to shake her worry, Brianna pulled out her phone and dialed Tristan’s number.

“Hello?” Tristan answered.
“Tristan, is Nancy in Port City?” Brianna asked.
Tristan snapped to attention, his voice shooting up. “What? She’s in Port City?”
“Pretty sure it was her,” Brianna said. “She left the hotel and went down toward the rocks under the bridge.”
Tristan let out a frustrated sigh. “Alright, hang on. I’ll call her folks and find out.”
After hanging up, Brianna gave Clifford an apologetic smile.
“Sorry, hang on a second. Just making sure it’s actually someone I know,” she said.
When Clifford got the call from Brandon, he was eager for some alone time with Brianna. He made an excuse to leave his girlfriend and hurried over.
Just as he was about to reach the hotel entrance, he spotted Brianna coming his way and quickly caught up to her.
Now, standing by the street, the distant bridge glowed with lights, and the night breeze played with her hair.
Clifford couldn’t help but smile.
After a while, Tristan called back.
“Hey, so, was it really her?” Brianna asked.
“Yeah, it’s her,” Tristan said, his voice heavy. “Don’t bother with her. She’s booked a cruise for tonight. Just leave her be.”
“Alright,” Brianna replied, not saying anything more.
After hanging up, Brianna flashed Clifford a reassuring smile. “All good now. Let’s head out.”
“So, who was that?” Clifford asked as they walked away, unable to hide his curiosity.
“Just someone I know through a friend,” Brianna brushed him off, her thoughts still elsewhere.
She could almost hear the faint rustling of an invisible net falling from above, each loop drawing tighter and tighter, trapping her right at the heart of it all.
The car screeched to a halt under the new hotel’s portico.
Clifford handed her the room key, tracing the edge with his thumb. “If you’re scared, I can stay.”
There was a flicker in his eyes, the night making it feel even more intense.
