Chapter 168 Sparring with Kane

After getting her child to sleep, Brianna wrapped herself in a coat and sat by the window. The wind slipped through the cracks, chilling her fingertips, while her mind was a tangled mess.
She never expected that the guy she grew up with, the one who stayed up late with her and laughed as they vented about losers, would suddenly drop to one knee and confess he’d been into her for years.
Regret, anger, and fear piled up inside her, making it hard to breathe. She felt like she was caught in a whirlpool, with no one around, and she couldn’t even cry out for help.
After a long while, unable to stop worrying about Tristan, she dialed Patsy’s number.
“Hello?” Patsy’s voice sounded groggy.
“Did I wake you up?” Brianna asked, half out of it, only then realizing it was already past two in the morning.
There was a brief silence on the other end, then Patsy’s voice snapped awake. “What’s wrong?”
Brianna took a deep breath, as if she was choking on the words. “Tristan… proposed to me tonight.”
“Oh,” Patsy replied, totally unfazed. She even sighed softly. “Figured as much.”
“You already knew?” Brianna’s voice shot up, her heart clenching tight.
Turned out everyone saw through it except her. She’d been stuck in her own illusion of “just friends.”
“He’s had a thing for you for years. If he didn’t make a move after your divorce, now that would’ve been weird,” Patsy said, so casually.
Patsy’s nonchalant words landed like the final blow, smashing whatever hope Brianna still had.
Brianna managed a bitter smile, her eyes stinging with emotion.
On one hand, she honestly didn’t have romantic feelings for him. But on the other, how could she hurt the guy who’d always been there for her, even asking his family to step in for her sake?
“Don’t carry that weight,” Patsy said, as if she could see straight through Brianna. “You just got divorced. He understands.”
“How did you know I turned him down?” Brianna asked.
“If you’d said yes, would you really be calling me at two in the morning?” Patsy let out a soft laugh, her voice like a gentle lull in the night.
Brianna let out a soft laugh, but her eyes grew warm with unshed tears.
She gazed down at her sleeping daughter, that little upturned nose so much like Brandon’s. Suddenly, a huge

emptiness opened up inside her-the emptiness felt raw, as if the wind was howling through her heart.
After hanging up, the darkness settled back into silence.
She rested her cheek against Kendra’s forehead, a single tear falling quietly, for Tristan, for herself, and for the lingering turmoil of a marriage that had ended, yet its echoes refused to fade.
Just like Patsy said, the next morning, when Brianna walked into her office, Tristan was already there, sitting
calmly on the black sofa with a thermos in hand.
Morning light sliced through the blinds, casting a soft golden glow over his shoulders and back, making the orange thermos look even warmer and more inviting.
The moment she pushed the door open, he stood up with a casual smile. “Hey, you’re here. Drink it while it’s still hot.”

“Who told you that?” Brianna raised an eyebrow, caught off guard. She hadn’t even finished reading the partnership proposal Tristan brought over.
As soon as she finished, Tristan sauntered over to Brianna, hands shoved in his pockets, looking all laid-back, but his eyes were sharp. “So, Mr. Flynn, you really think picking you is somehow classier than going with the Pratt Group?”
As soon as Kane walked into the office, he immediately spotted Tristan.
Kane had always been arrogant, never even giving Brandon the time of day. Now, faced with Tristan’s provocation, he just smirked with disdain.
“Got any other brilliant ideas, Mr. Pratt?” Kane shot back.
Kane had caught wind of how Tristan broke off his engagement with Nancy and had a big blow-up with his family.

The way Brianna trusted Tristan snuffed out the light in Kane’s eyes, leaving nothing but cold ashes behind.
Tristan shot Kane a warning look, then leaned down and whispered in Brianna’s ear, “I’ll be right outside.”
With that, he stepped out, clearly reluctant, and as the door clicked shut, the tension in the room snapped tight.
The massive office felt like a prison cell, all the air sucked out, leaving only suffocating emptiness.
Brianna poured Kane a glass of water, the rippling surface catching the light and casting a chill glint at the edge of her gaze.
