Chapter 56
Chapter 56
Brianna’s surgery was still ongoing.
Brandon rushed to Kendra’s hospital room.
Her injuries weren’t too serious.

She had broken her arm. The cut on her forehead wasn’t deep. And thankfully, her brain was fine.
Brandon let out a sigh of relief.
He left Kendra in the care of Gabrielle and Margo.
Then he hurried back to the operating room.
Everyone only told Kendra that Brianna was hurt, too. But they didn’t mention how serious it was.
Kendra just figured Brianna had tripped, just like her.
Night had fallen.
Margo tried to persuade Gabrielle to head home and get some rest.
But Gabrielle had too much weighing on her mind. There was no way she could fall asleep.
Margo patiently urged Gabrielle again and again. Finally, she managed to get Gabrielle to go home.
As Margo helped Gabrielle downstairs, the two of them discussed what had happened.
Darcy, hugging a plush toy to her chest, walked in with a charming smile.
Kendra watched Darcy, her face full of troubled thoughts.
Darcy’s heart sank. But she kept her feelings completely hidden.
She handed the plush toy to Kendra.
“Kendra, look. I got you a limited edition plush toy,” Darcy said. “Do you like it?”
With that, Darcy stuffed the plush toy into Kendra’s arms.
Kendra took the plush toy without even a flicker of joy.
Darcy tried to lighten the mood with playful conversation, but inside, she was a bundle of nerves.
‘If Kendra ever figured out I was behind it, that would spell trouble for me,’ Darcy thought. ‘How do Brianna and Kendra always manage to survive?’
Kendra stared at Darcy’s radiant face, then suddenly lifted her head.

With a dead serious expression, she said, “I know you pushed me.”
Darcy’s eyes went wide in shock.
Her smile disappeared instantly, and she locked her gaze on Kendra.

“But I won’t tell Mom and Dad,” Kendra continued. “I like you. Even though you hurt me, I still want to play with you.”
Darcy was stunned as she looked at Kendra.
She saw nothing but sincerity in Kendra’s face.
Darcy smirked with contempt.
Kendra continued, “I know you did it because you want to get close to Dad. I don’t blame you. As long as you keep playing with me, I’ll keep your secret forever.”
Darcy agreed without hesitation.
She didn’t bother with her usual sweet act. Her face twisted with open disdain.
“Deal, it’s a promise,” Darcy replied.
Kendra looked torn, her face showing a mix of emotions.
“I know you want to be with Dad,” she said. “I want you to live with us too, but I don’t want you to hurt Mom.”
Kendra’s face twisted with conflicting feelings.
Her voice trailed off at the end.
Darcy looked at Kendra, her eyes full of contempt.
She coaxed, “You’re right, Kendra. I do feel guilty for hurting you. But honestly, all I want is to be with your dad. Then I can live with you. We’ll always be together, okay?”
The worry faded from Kendra’s face. Her face lit up with anticipation.
Darcy kept coaxing her for ages, laying it on thick.
Eventually, Kendra dropped her guard around Darcy.
It was as if the whole drama had never even happened.
Darcy walked out of the hospital room.
She immediately spotted Margo standing there, arms crossed over her chest.
There was a mocking smile playing at the corner of Margo’s lips.

Margo had her eyes locked on Darcy.
A flicker of panic crossed Darcy’s face.
‘Did Margo hear that?’ Darcy wondered.
But she quickly covered it up and put on her sweetest smile again.
“Margo, you’re back?” Darcy said. “Kendra’s already asleep.”
Margo’s smile vanished in an instant. Her expression turned fierce and menacing.
She reached out and wrapped her hand around Darcy’s neck.
“Trying to show off in front of a pro like me? You’re still way too green.” Margo sneered.
Darcy’s face went white with shock.
“Margo, I swear, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Darcy stammered.
Margo tightened her hold.
She gripped Darcy’s neck, choking her with relentless force.
When Darcy was on the verge of suffocating, Margo finally released her.
Darcy coughed hard as she tried to catch her breath.
Margo got right up in Darcy’s face.
Her voice was barely above a whisper, but it hit like a sledgehammer.
“If you so much as harm my family again, I’ll show you exactly what the Levy family can do.”
Then she strode back into the room without even glancing over her shoulder.
Darcy’s knees nearly buckled.
Her chest was tight, and she was struggling to breathe.
Panic gripped her, refusing to let go.
She felt that all her previous efforts had been in vain.
Her dreams felt like they were drifting out of reach.
After a while, she regained her composure at last.
She slowly left the hospital room.
The empty hospital corridor helped her slowly regain her composure.

‘If Margo really planned to tell Brandon, she wouldn’t have bothered threatening me. Since Margo threatened me, maybe that means she won’t tell Brandon.
‘After all, there’s bad blood between Margo and Brandon. If not for that, Margo wouldn’t have helped me so many times.’
With that thought, Darcy felt her anxiety melt away.
She headed toward the operating room, her steps light and carefree.
Margo indeed wasn’t planning to tell Brandon.
She glanced at Kendra’s sleeping face and shook her head, feeling speechless.
‘She has no backbone at all, Margo thought. ‘There’s not a trace of Brandon in her. She’s indecisive and sentimental, just like her mom.’
Margo found herself thinking about Brianna.
Margo turned off the lights.
In the darkness, Margo’s eyes stayed open.
Brandon had made her lose a child. And because of her, he ended up losing one as well.
‘Guess we’re even now, Margo thought.
Meanwhile, it wasn’t until deep into the night that the operating room doors finally opened.
A nurse wheeled Brianna out.
She was still unconscious. Her body was covered in tubes.
Brandon’s heart clenched with pain.
He stepped forward, gently brushing her forehead, worry written all over his face.
The doctor stepped out.
Brandon asked, “How is she, doctor?”
The doctor replied, “I’m sorry, Mr. Levy. We couldn’t save the baby.”
Brandon nodded.
Deep down, he knew that after injuries like that, there was no way the baby could have survived.
As long as Brianna was okay, that was all he cared about.
All day, Brandon wished he could trade his own life for hers, just so she’d make it through.

The doctor went on, “She has multiple fractures, and her internal organs and brain are injured. Things aren’t looking good. We’ll need to keep her in the ICU for close monitoring.”
