Lydia POV
“Hmm?”
“You owe me two trips.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“Two.”
“Two what?”
“Two vacations.”
I laughed.
“Already?”
“Yes.”
“Your mother just got her memory back.”
“Exactly.”
“And this is what you’re negotiating?”
“Yes.”
I shook my head.
“Unbelievable.”
He grinned.
“I already have two locations.”
“Of course you do.”
“I’ve been thinking.”
“Apparently.”
He started explaining his vacation plans with the seriousness of someone presenting a business proposal.
Ava waited until he finished.
Then she looked at me.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“I have a question.”
“Go ahead.”
“When I’m ten, can I go to the space?”
I stared at her.
“Oh my God.”
“What?”
“You two are really doing this right now?”
They both laughed.
“So?”
I sighed dramatically.
“Okay.”
“Yes?”
“We’ll see how it goes.”
They looked at each other.
Then Eli nodded.
“Okay, Mom.”
Ava nodded too.
“We can see how it goes.”
I laughed.
“Exactly.”
And just like that, we moved on.
Like we hadn’t spent the last week terrified.
Like I hadn’t forgotten them.
Like they hadn’t been waiting for me.
They just wanted their mother.
And I wanted my babies.
We spent the next few hours talking.
They told me everything I had apparently missed.
Their school.
Their friends.
Their arguments.
Their little routines.
The things they loved.
The things they hated.
The things they had apparently been doing while I was unconscious.
We were together.
We were laughing.
We were vibing.
And slowly, the house started feeling like home again.
Eventually, the twins began yawning.
Ava tried to pretend she wasn’t tired.
Eli didn’t even bother.
“Nap time,” I said.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“But I’m not tired.”
He yawned immediately.
I raised an eyebrow.
He looked offended.
“That doesn’t count.”
“It absolutely counts.”
They both hugged me before leaving.
“Love you, Mom.”
“I love you too.”
“Don’t forget us again.”
My heart squeezed.
“I won’t.”
They left.
And suddenly the room became quiet.
It was just me.
Dave.
And Theo.
I looked between them.
Yeah.
This was going to be interesting.
I turned toward Theo.
“Come.”
He looked at me.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
He walked closer.
I could see the confusion on his face.
I glanced at Dave.
His expression was…
Yeah.
Crazy.
I knew exactly what that look meant.
He had probably spent the last week watching Theo and me get along while Lydia-the-memory-loss-version of me had absolutely no idea what was going on.
And now that I remembered everything?
“Thank you for being honest.”
“Are you okay?”
“No.”
I laughed nervously.
“Okay.”
“But I’ll be okay.”
I hugged him again.
“I’m sorry.”
He patted my back.
“Don’t.”
“I still love you.”
“I know.”
“You’re still my friend.”
“Good.”
“My brother.”
He laughed.
“Don’t push it.”
I laughed.
“Fine.”
He pulled away.
“But I need some time.”
“Of course.”
“I need to navigate this.”
“I understand.”
He pointed at me.
“And don’t hug me again.”
I laughed.
“Why?”
“Because I’m trying to leave with my dignity.”
I laughed harder.
“Okay.”
“Bye.”
“Bye.”
He walked away.
I watched him go.
My heart hurt.
But not because I doubted my decision.
I didn’t.
I knew who I loved.
I knew who I wanted.
I knew where my heart was.
And that was enough.
I turned around and walked back upstairs.
Toward Dave.
My ex husband.
The man I’d apparently forgotten.
The man I’d somehow fallen in love with all over again without even remembering that I’d loved him before.
I stopped outside his room.
Took a breath.
And opened the door.
“Dave.”
He looked up.
And the second our eyes met, I knew this conversation was going to change everything.
