Chapter 111 A Battle for the Middle Spot
Matthew was furious.
He lay stiffly on his back, staring up at the stone ceiling. Then, without a sound, he slipped a hand beneath the beast–hide blanket, quietly found Jaden’s backside, pinched a soft bit of flesh between his thumb and forefinger–and gave it a sharp squeeze.
Jaden hissed and jerked upright, looking behind him.
Zachary asked, “What’s wrong?”
Just as Matthew thought Jaden might keep quiet, the cub’s face crumpled in grievance. “Sire… someone pinched me.”
Zachary would never do something like that, and Jaden certainly wouldn’t pinch himself.
So the two of them turned in unison to look at Matthew.
Matthew was startled, suddenly feeling a little tense.
His face stayed calm as ever, returning an innocent, puzzled look.

Because Matthew held such a lofty image in Zachary’s mind, Zachary dismissed it as an accident. “Maybe he grabbed you by mistake. Your Alpha didn’t mean it,” he said, comforting Jaden.
The cub gave a muffled response and quietly covered his backside.
The cave gradually fell silent.
In the darkness, Matthew suddenly opened his eyes. He reached over and, without waking them, switched the positions of Jaden–who had been sleeping in the middle–and Zachary.
Satisfied, he wrapped his arms around Zachary and settled in, ready for a perfect night.
But as the night wore on, Zachary turned over, facing away from Matthew, and instinctively pulled Jaden back into his arms.
Matthew sat up, irritated. He promptly moved Jaden to the outer edge, claimed the middle spot for himself, and pulled Zach
into his embrace once more. Only then did he close his eyes in satisfaction.
Now, the perfect night could begin.

Morning came.
Matthew woke first.
Zachary was curled entirely into his arms, both hands wrapped around his waist, his face buried against the

deliberately exposed muscles of Matthew’s chest. His fluffy silver–gray hair stuck up in soft tufts.
The sight made Matthew’s heart melt. He gently nuzzled him with his chin, then pressed a kiss to Zachary’s forehead.
One kiss turned into many. From his forehead to his neck, Matthew couldn’t stop. In the end, he buried his face against him and took a deep breath, savoring the warmth.
Finally satisfied, Matthew was about to get up when he turned his head–and saw Jaden lying in the blanket glaring at him with a dark, sulky expression.
Matthew met his stare calmly. “You’re the one who can’t stay still in your sleep.”
What does that have to do with me?
Of course Jaden didn’t believe him. But there was nothing he could do. He’d learned early on that people could be downright devious.
He had been planning to slip back into Sire’s arms once Alpha left.
Instead, Matthew got out of bed, grabbed him by the scruff of the neck, and hauled him up as well.
Jaden struggled, wriggling like a catfish flopping on land.
But against absolute strength, resistance was useless.
Matthew carried him straight out of the cave before finally setting him down.
Annoyed, Jaden stomped toward the cave, ready to run back inside.
Matthew spoke flatly. “Don’t wake your Sire. There’s no firewood left.”
Jaden ground his teeth, tempted to bite the Alpha.
“Close it,” Matthew said coolly.
Jaden was forced to give in.
A while later, Zachary slowly woke up. Having someone else there really did make a difference–the bed had been so warm, like sleeping next to a big heater all night.
Matthew had already left after grabbing a quick bite, heading out with the other therians for a group hunt.
Jaden hadn’t eaten, but he still had to wash
pot.
After cleaning up, he went about his daily routine: gathering firewood and sharpening his claws.
When Zachary stepped out of the on a branch.
Jaden had just climbed a very tall tree, eyeing a bird’s nest

Unforgivable.
Zachary hadn’t noticed him at first. But when he tilted his head back to stretch his neck, he caught sight of a small dark figure on a distant branch.
He hurried over. Those blue eyes were unmistakable, especially against the black fur.
Zachary didn’t dare call out, afraid of startling him. He could only stand there, heart in his throat, staring up anxiously.
Jaden arched his back, hugging the trunk as he crept closer in silence.
But he was still big enough that it was hard not to be noticed.
The black bird resting in the nest suddenly flapped its wings and shot into the air, cawing in panic. /
What an awful sound.
Jaden couldn’t help but complain inwardly.
Realizing his intent, the black bird grew furious. It circled his head, looking for an to peck him.
Jaden immediately swiped at it with his paw.
Zachary tensed instantly.
The bird flew off, then came back again, repeating the attack.
opening, then darted in
Jaden ignored it. He climbed to the nest, reached out, and knocked it straight to the ground.
Seeing its home destroyed, the bird was so enraged it nearly forgot to flap its wings, squawking furiously.
As if on purpose, Jaden lifted his chin high, his tail swaying lazily, then began climbing down at an unhurried pace.
Only when he was at a safe height did Zachary finally dare to call out, “Jaden.”
