Chapter 140 Memories Like a Dream
Matthew didn’t respond. Instead, he simply turned his back toward the child and
flicked his tail.

“Wow!” The child immediately lit up with excitement, climbing up from the therian’s arms and cupping the little black panther’s head in both hands, gently petting him again and again. “Your fur is so soft!”
His eyelashes were still damp, but his eyes had already curved into crescents, smiling as brightly as the
moon.
The therian sat cross–legged on the ground, watching with great interest as his cub was being patted on the head, rubbed on the belly, and even having his tail stroked.
If it had been anyone else, Matthew would’ve bared his teeth and swiped with his claws long ago. Everyone in the tribe knew this cub was “cold and aloof“-aside from his Sire, he let no one touch him.
“Will you come home with me?” The child wrapped his arms around the little black panther’s neck, nuzzling him affectionately. “I’ll use my allowance to buy you fish, lots and lots of fish…”
Matthew’s ears twitched uncontrollably, his back tensing slightly. He tilted his head, his whiskers brushing against the child’s cheek.
“That tickles!” The child giggled, his eyes sparkling like stars.
“My grandma loves Molly so much–she’ll definitely like you too… we can sleep together on my bed…” The child rambled happily by Matthew’s ear, growing more excited with every word.
The little black panther stood still, the child’s short arms wrapped tightly around his neck in an overly enthusiastic embrace.
The therian had rarely seen his cub look this helpless and found it endlessly amusing. Resting his chin on his hand, he simply continued watching the spectacle.
“Why aren’t you saying anything?” The child tilted his face up, then suddenly seemed to realize something and smiled shyly. “Oh, right–you’re a kitty right now. Well then, if you agree, make a sound, okay?”
Matthew looked toward his Alpha. Even in beast form, a hint of stupefaction could still be seen on his face.
The therian, enjoying the moment, added fuel to the fire. “Go on, make a sound.”
“Yeah, yeah! Your Alpha agrees too!” The child loosened his arms, holding the little black panther’s face and gazing at him with shining eyes. “Just like this–say ‘meow‘ once…”
They waited for quite a while, but Matthew didn’t make a sound.
The child’s gaze dimmed with disappointment.
Just as Matthew hesitated, wondering if he should comfort him, the child suddenly leaned in and planted a loud kiss on the little black panther’s forehead.
Matthew’s pupils lifted, catching sight of the child’s soft, chubby cheeks–they looked like they’d be easy to pinch.

Chapter 140 Memories Like a Dream
The little black panther’s tail began to sway gently from side to side.
“It’s okay. I still really, really like you…” A few strands of black fur stuck to the child’s lips. “When I get home, I’ll call you… But I have to go to school. When I’m on break, I’ll come find you…“.
More scenes followed–familiar yet strangely distant to Zachary, flashing past like fragments of memory.
On the highland slope, Matthew carried the child on his back, climbing uphill. Though he was just a child himself, he held the boy steady. The child wrapped his arms around Matthew’s neck and asked in a soft,. childish voice. “Are you tired?”
“I’m good.” Matthew adjusted him like a little adult. “Are

wou hungry?”
In the distance, the therian had already caught a rabbit and begun roasting it.
Matthew set the child down and brought him water cupped in a leaf. “Drink.”
K
“Thank you.”
As the child drank, Matthew tore the tenderest pieces of rabbit meat into thin strips, placing them on a leaf. But the child didn’t seem too interested, so Matthew climbed a tree again, gathering fruit and even finding bird eggs.
The child stayed below, cheering and clapping. “You’re incredible!”
With a loud pop, one of the eggs burst in the fire. Startled, the child immediately grabbed onto Matthew beside him. Calm as ever, Matthew used a stick to pull the egg out, peeling away the charred shell before handing it over. “Eat.”
Eggs were a familiar food–fragrant and good. The child ate three in a row before returning to nibbling on fruit.
When the therian saw there were leftovers and reached for them, Matthew stopped him. “You eat the meat.” Then he wrapped the remaining roasted eggs in leaves and tucked them into the pile of fruit.
The therian crossed his arms, looking thoroughly amused, as if he saw right through everything.
The scenes flickered past like a film reel.
The large black panther carried both children on his back, Matthew sitting behind the younger one, holding down his flailing hands until, in the end, he had no choice but to wrap his arms around him to keep him steady.
Under the glow of the setting sun, the two boys lay side by side on the grass, shoulders touching. The child pointed at the clouds and insisted one looked just like Matthew in his “kitty” form.
Matthew said it didn’t, but the child sat up, tracing the outline of the cloud with his finger. “This is your ear, this is your nose, and here are your paws and tail…”
Before long, the conversation drifted to Molly again. The child animatedly recounted her heroic mouse-

hunting feats, then turned onto his side, hugging Matthew’s arm as he asked curiously, “Can you catch/mice? Can you catch birds? Why don’t I ever see you lick your paws? And every time you turn into a kitty, you have to take off your clothes–isn’t that a hassle?”
At first, Matthew answered each question patiently. But as they kept coming, he eventually just closed his eyes and pretended not to hear.
Thinking the boy had fallen asleep, the child immediately quieted down.
